'We must stand together': Biden calls on Americans to stop viewing their political opponents as enemies

Source: NBC News

July 14, 2024, 2:32 PM EDT / Updated July 14, 2024, 8:00 PM EDT

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden called on Americans to "lower the temperature" in political rhetoric in an address from the Oval Office on Sunday night, asking for more respectful discourse and civility in the wake of the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

“Disagreement is inevitable in American democracy,” Biden said, adding that politics should never turn into a “killing field.”

“While we may disagree, we are not enemies,” Biden said during his approximately six minutes of remarks. “We’re neighbors, we’re friends, coworkers, citizens, and most importantly, we are fellow Americans. We must stand together.”

The speech is only the third Biden has delivered from the Oval Office during his term. Presidents typically reserve the Oval Office for speeches of the highest consequence, typically war and peace.

He has rarely done any addresses from the Oval Office so this would add extra gravity to the situation.

Biden to give Oval Office address Sunday evening following Trump shooting

July 14, 2024, 2:32 PM EDT

In an address from the White House on Sunday afternoon, President Joe Biden spoke about yesterday's assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump and cautioned Americans against making "assumptions about [the shooter's] motives or his affiliations."

He spoke about the importance of national unity and promised to speak on the subject more during an Oval Office address Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET.

The president also spoke about the "short but good conversation" he had with Trump earlier today, adding that "Jill and I are keeping him and his family in our prayers." Biden mentioned the briefing he had in the White House Situation Room earlier Sunday that included Vice President Kamala Harris and top White House advisers.

Biden also said he's asked the director of the Secret Service to review all security measures for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, which begins tomorrow. The president also said he's asked for an independent review of security at yesterday's rally and promised to publicly share the results of that review.

The only thing I want to hear is the acknowledgement that the biggest promoter of political violence is that orange motherfucker himself, and that this sort of thing was inevitable because the media treated it as a spectacle, not a danger.

Because the yellow journalist-filled, RW-owned corporate media won't cover him otherwise unless they can create an AI-generated slime story and narrative about him. So doing these remarks "commands the networks" to cover him in his Presidential capacity.

This was an R on R crime. We had nothing to do with it and I will be damned if I will let Republicans try and put any blame on Democrats in general or the president.

The right has done way too much damage to our nation and the greater good. It all started with Rush Limbaugh whose hateful rhetoric and vitriol found an emboldened audience and its use got the right both houses in the 90s. Then you have the original January 6 riot back in 2000 in Miami which, with all truth, stole the presidency from Al Gore and then Bush stole the election again, this time from John Kerry. After 8 years of high quality leadership of Barrack Obama, the right stole another for Trump, this time from Hillary. I put the blame on all of this squarely on those RWers who voted them in office. They know what they are doing. And I'll be damned if I let them destroy our way of life even if it comes to the last resort. There is no other choice, they put us in an uncompromising position.

a demonic pedophile. I will not stand with a Nazi.

Sorry President Biden and others, but the fascist fake Christian Republicon right wing propaganda machine wants money. The only way they make their money is to keep their angry base of uneducated white Americans motivated to give money is to scare them into thinking I'm their enemy.

In other words, I'll unify with MAGA once they admit their mistakes and apologize for them.

I've lost to many of my family to fascism not to view the MAGA fascist as an "enemy". They pose a greater danger to this country than Russia or any other country. IMO. They may not be your enemy, Joe, but they are mine.
