Live Election Updates: J.D. Vance Is Trump's Choice for Vice President
Source: New York Times
A political newcomer and former Trump critic turned ally, the senator is an ambitious, telegenic ideologue who relishes the spotlight and has already shown he can energize donors.
Mr. Vance, 39, is a political newcomer who entered the Senate only last year, but he has spent that time methodically ascending the conservative firmament. Once an acerbic Trump critic attacking Mr. Trump as reprehensible and calling him cultural heroin he won Mr. Trumps backing in his 2022 Senate race by wholly embracing his politics and his lies about a stolen election. The endorsement lifted him above a crowded field, and ultimately to the Senate.
Mr. Vance, a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley who became best known for writing the memoir Hillbilly Elegy, did not forget it. He quickly emerged as a top defender of the former president in the halls of Congress and on television, taking his cues from Mr. Trump while frequently bucking the priorities of Senator Mitch McConnell, the chambers longtime Republican leader.
Mr. Trumps announcement came just days after he survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, an episode that underlined the significance of his selecting a running mate who might be in line as Mr. Trumps successor.

(1,406 posts)Vance assures continuity of fascism for another 8 years. That is a total of 12 years. Elections will be rigged. Justice Dept destroyed. If we don't win in 2024, we are F'ed.

(7,372 posts)I got it from my book swap. I wasn't impressed. JD Vance is a middle class kid from Ohio, not a hillbilly, even though he had country folk in his family.

(3,007 posts)Took the time to read, but didn't cost anything.
He grew up in a middle-class city, but had a dysfunctional family relationship due to *their* background.
Lots of people have dysfunctional families. They don't turn out to be shameless opportunists.

(2,252 posts)The only thing not phony about him IMO is his opportunism and willingness to be a backstabber to get ahead.

(585 posts)There have been reports on this forum and internet, that JD Vance has ties to billionaire Peter Thiel.
Trump is going to support the donor class.
What a surprise!:

(27,441 posts)He was also a large backer in the PAC that got Vance started on his run for Senate two years ago.

After Dotard is dead, this asshole will continue the MAGAt movement? Lord, help us.
Like a car wreck in slow motion, we can all kiss America goodbye while 50% of the population can't be bothered to vote.

(27,441 posts)And it isn't as though Biden is the only older candidate in the race.
He wasn't likely to be a 2028 contender without this promotion

(174 posts)Jr. will have a thing or two to say about that
It kills Trump that he can't fire the VP

(101,570 posts)And he'll get it if Trump wins.

(256 posts)Trump out lasted Pence, he won't last a second term. All Vance's ass kissing to get Trump's favor was calculated on his part. He wants to be the top dog and knows mush brain won't last long.
He went from not in politics to a Senator only 2 years into his first term. Now with a chance to be VP to a POTUS in questionable health. Vance is ambitious and every bit as amoral as Trump. I'm not sure if he is AS ruthless as TCF, but he is plenty ruthless and much smarter than Trump.
The way he sees it, Trump wins and he leap frogs to the top. Trump loses and he goes back to his Senate seat with 4 years til his next election.
Initech
(101,570 posts)But we have to work to get rid of toxic career politicians like Vance who have no business being in the senate, other than they advertise themselves on fucking Fox News 24 hours a day. Once again, proving that Fox News is Trump's vice. Fox isn't a news network, it's a marketing firm for GOP candidates and GOP policies.

(101,570 posts)Which means if he follows the Project 2025 playbook, he could be in power for an extremely long time and will be very difficult, if not impossible to get rid of. Total nightmare scenario there.

(1,575 posts)I'm seeing a ton of MAGA supporters furious at this pick. Calling it "Pence 2.0" and referring to J. D. Vance's past comments disparaging Trump.
I don't see Vance as anything but an echo chamber for Trump. I can't see Vance bringing in independents or undecideds. And, if you can believe Twitter, Trump's most ardent MAGA supporters don't like this VP choice either. Some seem downright angry at this choice. Not that they will change their vote but definitely not exciting them.
Of all the choices I think J. D. Vance is the choice most favorable for Dems.
I guess we'll see.

Kamala will wipe the floor with J.D. (as I call him: Just Dumb) in a debate. Again I say: Bring. It. On.
I still think Biden needs to show up outside the RNC convention in his golf attire and bag of clubs. "I booked us a tee time at the local muni course, Donald. I am ready to accept the challenge you gave me at the first debate. I will walk the course and carry my own clubs, like I always do. I understand if you have to use a golf cart, Donnie."
