Vance's attack on "childless" Harris becomes rallying cry for women

Source: Axios

An attack on Vice President Kamala Harris for not having biological children has spurred intense backlash from celebrity voices, the internet's "cat ladies" and her own blended family.

Why it matters: A resurfaced 2021 comment from vice presidential candidate JD Vance criticizing "childless cat ladies" on the left — listing Harris by name — has earned him harsh criticism, as a growing share of adults under 50 say they're unlikely to have kids.

  • A Thursday report from Pew Research Center found that 47% of adults under 50 without kids say they're unlikely to have them, a number up 10 points from 2018.

  • What they're saying: Kerstin Emhoff, Doug Emhoff's ex-wife, snapped back at "baseless" attacks against Harris, reflecting on their 10-plus years of co-parenting with Harris and the Second Gentleman.

  • Harris became a stepmother in 2014 to her husband's two children — Cole and Ella — who she has said refer to her as "Momala."
  • "She is loving, nurturing, fiercely protective, and always present. I love our blended family and am grateful to have her in it," Kerstin Emhoff continued.
  • Ella Emhoff shared her mother's statement on her Instagram story, writing, "I love my three parents."

  • Zoom out: Jennifer Aniston also shared her shock and rage via Instagram stories, writing, "I truly can't believe this is coming from a potential VP of The United States."

  • The "Friends" star continued, referencing threats to in-vitro fertilization: "Mr. Vance, I pray that your daughter is fortunate enough to bear children of her own one day."
  • Meghan McCain, the daughter of the late Republican Sen. John McCain, also chimed in, saying Vance's jab "made so many waves with so many different friends of mine for its insensitivity and cruelty to women."
  • Swifties also rose up against Vance, noting their favorite childless cat lady, Taylor Swift herself, has yet to make an endorsement in the 2024 race.

The GOP has been crushed in every special election since Roe was overturned. We're talking 25 point swings. The whole forced birth thing is going to consume them.

I couldn’t have biological children but I’m a step mom, have 3 grandsons, 3 godchildren, nieces, nephews, etc., I care immensely about them and their futures. What Vance is saying is if you don’t give birth you are selfish, don’t care or as he put it, “no skin in the game”. For some women it’s a conscious and very personal choice and for others like me, a heartbreak. The statement is outrageous and needs to stay in the public discourse, he’s obviously just like trump and has no clue what ordinary people, think, feel or experience.

I didn't have the opportunity to have children of my own because I never met a man I wanted to marry and have children with. That's just my tough luck. I was interested in being a foster mom or adopting, but when I got serious about it my divorced mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. So instead of caring for children, I cared for her, and that's okay.

I was also a public school teacher for 9 years and taught around 1200 teenagers over that time. I dare ANYONE to accuse me of caring less about our country's, and the planet's, future. On the contrary, I don't only care about my children, I care about EVERYONE'S children.

    I like cats too

He loves that POS being as evil, racist and sexist if not more than him. It's hard to beat Trump for true unbridled evil but Guyliner is the one. The RNC will tell Trump he needs to go but Trump won't allow it. He picked him and he's not going to lose face.

The two are going to ride over the cliff together back to the 20's...........

I also think he might can him just for the fact that he is getting more attention. He liked the blandness of Pence. He needs a Pence with no ethics about overturning elections. I would be surprised to see him keep such an attention grabber. I don't know their rules about switching but when have rules mattered to him? They allow him to break all rules.

And trump is not about to admit he made a mistake. Vance could suddenly develop major medical problems that would force him to withdraw.

There are many reasons why women decide not to have kids. Many women have kids that they should not have. Its really none of Vance's business.

Women are going to turn out in droves to vote against trump/vance. We thought it would be bad if trump was back in the White House. Imagine if trump finally had his heart attack and vance was in charge.

over their relationships to showcase their dominance on an everyday basis. How disgusting. They want to go back to the OLD days when women were basically locked in the kitchen, at home, rearing kids, working the garden, etc.

    Below snippet of article:

An increasing share of adults under 50 say they're unlikely to have kids — and the major reason is, well, they just don't want them, according to a report from Pew Research Center out Thursday morning. Why it matters: The U.S. fertility rate is at a historic low, posing problems for yada yada yada...

By the numbers: 47% of adults under 50 without kids say they're unlikely to have them — up 10 percentage points from 2018.
Of those who said they're unlikely to have children, 57% said "they just don't want to." Among the other reasons: 44% said they wanted to focus on different things. 38% pointed to the state of the world, other than the environment. And 36% said they couldn't afford to raise a child. (from an Axos study)...some reasons are 13% cited infertility or other medical reasons. Another reason is that 64% of young women say they just don't want children, compared to 50% of men!!
