Biden will announce Supreme Court reform plans next week

Source: Politico

07/26/2024 07:34 PM EDT

President Joe Biden plans to unveil a proposal on Monday for dramatically reforming the Supreme Court, two people familiar with the matter told POLITICO. Biden is likely to endorse establishing term limits for justices and an enforceable code of ethics, in an announcement that represents a remarkable shift for a president who had long resisted calls to overhaul the high court.

He is also expected to push for a constitutional amendment limiting immunity for presidents and certain other officeholders, in a response to the court’s July 1 ruling that presidents are shielded from prosecution for “official acts” during their time in office, in a case brought by former President Donald Trump.

The specifics of the proposal remain unclear and could still change, said the people, who were granted anonymity to discuss internal planning.

Biden is expected to call for the overhaul during a trip to Texas, where he’s set to speak at the Lyndon Baines Johnson presidential library in Austin. The White House declined to comment, referring back to press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s remarks on Thursday that Biden “believes if you are serving in high office, you should be held to a transparency, accountability and you should be held to a high ethics.”

Let’s watch the Republicans twist into pretzel shapes to explain their opposition to ethical standards and term limits.

I'm glad the discussion is at least getting on the table with some power backing it up. These unconstrained ego maniacs need to follow the same code of ethics as the rest of the government ( which is still a little sketchy at times ). I think term limits with a rotation of terms so a president only gets one appointment per term would eventually help to restore balance to the court.

and signed into law, will it apply to justices who were on the court prior to this law (no ex post facto laws)?

Times have changed, and people aren't necessarily as honest (for the most part) as they used to be.

There were many, many awful Presidents, justices, and congressmen in the 1800s (and 1900s, of course).

Graham signals opposition to more justices on Supreme Court, term limits

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said that he would oppose Supreme Court reforms on Sunday, going against reported ideas from President Biden that would impose more strict ethics requirements and term limits for justices.

Graham told CBS’s Robert Costa on “Face the Nation” that he won’t work with Biden on any reform bill.

“No, because he wants to destroy the court. They want to pack the court. They want … to undercut the conservative court,” Graham said. “They’ve tried to marginalize the court and destroy the Roberts court. The Roberts court has brought constitutional balance back to the court, and the liberals in this country want to pack the court. They want to destroy the court.”

“So their initiatives coming from Biden will be dead on arrival in the Senate,” he continued. “They have no desire to make the court better. They’re just trying to make it more liberal.”
