Bomb Smuggled Into Tehran Guesthouse Months Ago Killed Hamas Leader
Source: NYT
Ismail Haniyeh, a top leader of Hamas, was assassinated on Wednesday by an explosive device covertly smuggled into the Tehran guesthouse where he was staying, according to seven Middle Eastern officials, including two Iranians, and an American official.
The bomb had been hidden approximately two months ago in the guesthouse, according to five of the Middle Eastern officials. The guesthouse is run and protected by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps and is part of a large compound, known as Neshat, in an upscale neighborhood of northern Tehran.
Mr. Haniyeh was in Irans capital for the presidential inauguration. The bomb was detonated remotely, the five officials said, once it was confirmed that he was inside his room at the guesthouse. The blast also killed a bodyguard.
The explosion shook the building, shattered some windows and caused the partial collapse of an exterior wall, according to the two Iranian officials, members of the Revolutionary Guards briefed on the incident. Such damage was also evident in a photograph of the building shared with The New York Times.

I wonder if devices were planted in multiple guest houses or if Haniyeh always stayed at that particular one.
Not finding it is rather unimpressive, Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

(20,774 posts)Many questions-
the Mossad walks into an apartment months ago and places a bomb in a highly guarded building?
If Haniyeh was the intended target, how did they know he would get that room?
If it was simply an opportunity, how many other rooms in Tehran have a just-in-case bomb waiting?
unless Iran wants an excuse to expand the conflict and the IRGC planted the bomb knowing everyone will immediately look at Israel...

If Haniyeh was the intended target, how did they know he would get that room?
They hacked the online room booking system. So easy.
If it was simply an opportunity, how many other rooms in Tehran have a just-in-case bomb waiting?

(11,407 posts)The paramilitary organisation said the projectile weighed about 7kg (16lbs) and caused a "strong blast", killing Haniyeh and his bodyguard last Wednesday. The Hamas leader had been visiting the Iranian capital for the inauguration of President Massoud Pezeshkian.
The IRGC accused Israel of designing and implementing the operation - supported by the US. Israel has not commented on Haniyeh's death.

(23,965 posts)know about it). The explosive or bomb, embedded within a piece of furniture or something else to remain hidden until ignited. I'm surprised that (1) sniffer dogs didn't catch a whiff of the bomb (2) and how did the bomb makers ensure that the bomb(s) would go off when they had their target finally there? Thus, I suspect that this was an inside job, perhaps?
