Proof-of-citizenship voting bill push could threaten government shutdown

Source: The Hill

08/28/24 6:00 AM ET

A conservative-backed push for stricter proof-of-citizenship requirements for voting could complicate efforts to avert a government shutdown next month. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have acknowledged a stopgap of some kind, also known as a continuing resolution (CR), will be necessary to keep the government funded past Sept. 30.

But calls are growing among House conservatives to use that must-pass measure to force consideration of a partisan bill aimed at barring noncitizens from voting – laying the groundwork for a clash with the Democratic-led Senate, which would likely reject such a package.

The hardline conservative House Freedom Caucus took an official position this month urging Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to attach the measure, dubbed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, to spending legislation next month.

Since then, the GOP conference’s right flank has only ramped up public calls for the move, which has also seen some pick-up in the upper chamber and among prominent figures like tech mogul Elon Musk, as the party looks to seize on immigration as a key campaign issue ahead of November.

Not this shit again. I'm so tired of the GQP threatening us with shutdowns. They clearly can't govern and their idea of governance is to burn everything down. Then they complain when benefit checks don't go out or their constituents don't get services. Disgusting.

How about we stop concerning ourselves with massive voting fraud that isn’t happening and just tell the GOP to STFU

I was forced to show my drivers licence each time. Of course this is Florida. What did other states require?

But it's expensive and time consuming for anyone who needs to get one NOW. Anyone who applies for a passport today might not receive it before November 5th, unless they pay the expedite fee which is up to $100 I think.

I shouldn’t have to go out and get a passport to vote! There may be many people can’t afford to get a passport. About twenty years ago I had to prove I lived in the US to get my drivers license by showing my birth certificate. I was in my late forties then. This is getting ridiculous.

Or anyone with a 'weird' surname.

Or anyone darker than a paper bag.

Oh, and black people will need five forms of ID to prove they're eligible to vote.

The Democratic Party could run agains this that the repukes are so unhinged and anti democracy they shut down the government.

I see a major backfire on the freedumb caucus.

If the Senate rejects their attached poison pill, they'd just claim it's the Democrats' fault that the government was shut down because the Democrats want illegals to vote.

That's how they roll.

Having a drivers' license doesn't prove one is a US citizen. They need a copy of their birth certificate, or a US Passport to prove citizenship. How many rural rednecks and Chumphumpers can do that on short-notice?

I fit the demographic of a MAGA voter and would never be challenged.

The ones who will be challenged will be those without white privilege.

you do have to have a certified copy of your birth certificate, proof of a social security number, and a bill with your address. So I would think those would work.

It is already federal law that you must indicate that you are a US citizen when you register to vote.
It is already federal that you must be a US citizen to register to vote.

You just don't have to prove it.

Some localities allow non-US citizens to vote in local elections. In some respects, I kinda wish they would drop this. It's too much fodder for the GOP. Allow non-citizens "to be heard"...Allow them delegation so they have a voice. Their votes probably do not sway elections anyway..Sorry to be blunt

How can they expect people to get proof that fast when getting passports and enhanced licenses are already difficult due to staffing shortages?

I am planning to go get my enhanced license asap.
