The numbers: Initial jobless claims fell by 2,000 to 231,000 in the week ended August 24, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had estimated new claims would fall by 2,000 to 230,000. Last week claims rose a revised 5,000 to 233,000. That compared with the initial estimate of a rise of 4,000 to 232,000.

Key details: The four-week moving average of claims fell 4,750 to 231,500. That’s the lowest level since early June.

The number of people already collecting jobless benefits in the week ended Aug. 17 rose by 13,000 to 1.868 million. On an unadjusted basis, claims stayed below 200,000.
