CHICAGO (CBS) -- Democratic National Convention attendees had hoped for Beyoncé on the last night of the event a week agobut after that letdown, some faced another one upon leaving the United Center in Chicago.
Social media has been buzzing because many attendees tested positive for COVID-19 when they got home.
Doctors say it almost seems like positive test results will be the new normal at big events like the Democratic National Conventionand the only way to avoid it is by taking precautions or getting a vaccination.
This convention was the first in eight years in which Democrats came together for such an event. The 2020 convention was held virtuallyspecifically because of COVID-19, back at the height of the pandemic and before a vaccine was approved.
But many of those in attendance left with COVID in 2024 too................

(48 posts)They call it allergies, flu or a cold - no isolation or masking that way. This has been my experience with that part of my family anyway.

(46,654 posts)but it was not widely reported elsewhere. Our side is more vaccinated and should fare better.

(799 posts)Some viruses don't clear out of your body like the virus that causes the common cold does.
The 1918 H1N1 Virus later brought on Parkinsons in big numbers
HPV - Can later cause cervical cancer (among many other types of cancer (anal, vulvar, head/neck)
HIV - AIDS
Chicken Pox Virus - Later causes Shingles
Herpes Virus - More Herpes outbreaks
Epstein Barr Virus - Causes Mononucleosis, and in some cases Lymphoma
RSV - potential to cause lifelong asthma when acquired as a small child
The thing about Sars-CoV2 is that we don't yet know the long-term effects of this vascular and respiratory system destroyer.
Even people who have a very mild initial infection were later found to still have the Sars-CoV2 virus lingering in their vascular system and organs.
At this point, Sars-CoV2 infections are looking more like AIDS than any of the other viruses as it is affecting every place in the body where your blood vessels go (hint: EVERYWHERE).
The fact that we're allowing Covid to run rampant among kids is CRAZY and ignorant.

IM (Mononucleosis) is a major risk factor for EBV-related conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and Hodgkin lymphoma. Highlighting this risk, a recent study found that, compared to other viruses, those who had contracted EBV were 32 times more likely to develop MS. There are currently no medical interventions available for EBV. Developing such interventions could reduce rates of EBV-related conditions, including MS, Hodgkin lymphoma, and various cancers.
Scientists have tested an EBV vaccine on mice (2023). Human trials pending.

(34,705 posts)So I've been wondering ... are we humans building up a resistance to Covid?
Of course getting vaccinated is the best defense. I was vaccinated twice, and then I caught a mild case of Covid almost 2 years ago. Am I less likely to get it again, having had Covid already?
It seems that most of the people I know (if they're willing to talk about it) have already had Covid, even if it's a brief, mild case. Is there really such a thing as "herd immunity"?

(900 posts)is a doctor. Please keep getting vaccinated every 4 months, if youre in a high risk category.

(28,997 posts)The virus must be frequently mutating. The vaccinations work. If you don't get vaccinated and catch Covid, your immune system will work much harder. If you are vaccinated and catch Covid, your immune system should not go into overdrive. It was the immune system's reaction that killed so many people when Covid first arrived. Shock and organ failure are a real thing when your immune system is overworked.
The vaccines may not prevent Covid, but they are preventing immune system issues.

(28,997 posts)Is it really associated with asthma? However, it doesn't linger like chicken pox or polio.
Covid does (did) cause a whacky immune system response, but as to whether it stays in your system forever is questionable.

(2,946 posts)I was her guest (she's disabled and I was her attendant) and we wore KN95 masks continuously, except for a couple of photos a couple of days, and to eat and drink (but tried mostly to do that under the masks as much as possible). But we were on the shuttle or in the center for 8 hours a day, and my daughter is quadriplegic and wasn't sitting by me on the shuttle, and it is hard for her to adjust her mask on her own. Plus the airport....
We have spent the last four years trying our best to avoid COVID (this is her first infection), and I still avoided it, somehow. We flew back Friday night, and she started feeling a little crappy on Saturday (so did I, since the convention was amazing, but also exhausting!), but tested negative that day, then positive on Sunday morning. She felt really crappy Sunday morning (with a temp of 102), but started Paxlovid by the early afternoon and in about 24 hours she said it just felt like a cold.
We were hoping the new vaccines would come out before the convention, but had to settle for another dose of the old version a couple of weeks before we we went to Chicago. Sascha has been invited to the South Lawn of the White House in early September (with the
President and First Lady hosting!) to belatedly commemorate the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, so at least she won't have to worry about getting infected on that trip!
