More artists demand Trump stop using their music

Source: Axios

Prominent artists have demanded Trump's campaign stop using their tunes on social media or at rallies — with lawsuits involved in some cases.

Why it matters: Celebrities have had a mega platform in offering or denying endorsements this election season, though it's unclear how voters will respond.

  • The White Stripes' lead singer Jack White threatened to sue Trump's team Thursday for posting a video of the GOP presidential nominee boarding a plane to the song "Seven Nation Army."
  • "Don't even think about my music you fascists," White wrote on Instagram. "Law suit coming from my lawyers about this (to add to your 5 thousand others.)."

  • What they're saying: "It's times like these you learn that it's all about money, money, money and not about freedom with these artists," Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement.

  • "But the nation will go on and President Trump will take back the White House to Save America."

  • State of play: Several artists have pushed back against the use of their music at Trump's events. The former president has faced similar calls since his 2016 campaign.

  • ABBA on Thursday asked Trump to stop using its music at campaign rallies, but the campaign said it had obtained a license, the AP reported.
  • Celine Dion's management said in a statement on Aug. 10 that playing "My Heart Will Go On" during a rally was not authorized and that Dion "does not endorse this or similar use."
  • The estate of songwriter Isaac Hayes sued Trump, alleging 134 counts of copyright infringement after asking the campaign to stop using the song "Hold On, I'm Coming."

Magats don’t really want to hear Lee Greenwood, Ted Nugent, or kid Rock at his rallies.

I mean we all now how Rush Limbaugh had to have Elton John play at his wedding and how Chris Christie is a big fan of Bruce Springsteen.

Rightwing music acts have limited appeal, much like the political party they support.

I saw an article a few years back, that Elton would go into an antique store, and run up a tab of $400K in under an hour. He likes lots of nice things.

...to use someone's song, why would they want to use it knowing they're going to get backlash from it? I suppose to MAGAs it could further show the "us vs them" mentality they have.

Don't they have enough songs to choose from among the catalogs of Ted Nugent, Kid Rock, Scott Baio, Skrewdriver...?

Allowing anyone to use it. The answer: Greed. They know they can make far more money selling the rights than retaining ownership and control over the music. Their complaints are just PR to their fans who don't know the legalities.

When they were barely more than kids, and were sick of living 10 to a 2 BDR apartment in the ghetto and mooching meals off groupies and strippers. It was sign here, and you get to live it up.

Maybe understand more about the industry yourself before trashing the artists that labels and publishers rip off as part of their standard operating procedure.

The groups selling their licenses are major groups. Venues are not using the music of nobodies. These groups are represented by sophisticated agents and lawyers. Sorry to bring some reality into this.

The venue has the license and can use it for any events at the venue. There is no legal basis for a complaint.

I know it’s difficult for transactional assholes like Steven Cheung to understand, but the artists do not want their names and their art associated with Donald Trump at any price.

It is the music business. If they want total control over authorized purchasing, they can self publish.

cannot exert any control when someone has paid for a music license that includes their music, but Cheung’s statement that these artists who are speaking out are only concerned about money implies that what they really want is to be paid for the use of their music.

The artists are being very clear that the only thing they want is for the Trump campaign to STOP using their music. And even if they can’t make it stop, they want to publicly express their displeasure at how their music is being used.
