Dems are "the clear underdogs," Harris campaign chair says

Source: Axios

Despite gaining a post-convention edge in polls, Jen O'Malley Dillon, chair of the Harris-Walz campaign, says in a memo out Sunday — "The State of the Race 65 Days Out" — that her candidate is the underdog.

Why it matters: Top Democrats are wary of the party's exuberance outrunning electoral reality in what is still a 50-50 nation.

"Since Vice President Harris entered the race in late July, our campaign has seen record fundraising numbers, a surge in volunteer interest, and a spike in enthusiasm to participate in this November's election," O'Malley Dillon writes.

  • "However, make no mistake: we head into the final stretch of this race as the clear underdogs. Donald Trump has a motivated base of support, with more support and higher favorability than he has had at any point since 2020."
  • In nine days, "Vice President Harris will face Trump on the debate stage, where we expect him to be a formidable opponent. In 2020, the election came down to about 40,000 votes across the battleground states. This November, we anticipate margins to be similarly razor-thin."

  • Between the lines: Both sides try to lower expectations. The Trump campaign correctly said Harris would likely get a polling bounce after her convention.

I know that they're trying to inject a little realism here, but still...after the Biden fiasco, and Harris coming in, give us a break. Build up our spirits and keep them up there, this is what we need, after the shocks of this election year thus far.

I would think w/ the massive outpouring that you all seen (the campaign vs. what us as voters have been doing), that our enthusiasm is there, our willingness is there, our energy is unlimited, etc.

    what they call "temper expectations".

But we have seen enough "anecdotal" evidence out there to clearly show something going on that is beyond "anecdotes" and is clearly establishing a "trend".

I actually heard this on the radio this morning (and just found a story about it, which was basically a transcript of the radio report but also includes the audio report in an embedded player) -

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Harris-Walz campaign is focusing on the next generation of voters. Democratic U.S. Rep. Maxwell Frost of Florida, the first Gen-Z member of Congress, made a stop in Philadelphia on Saturday to motivate young voters to vote.

Young people showed up to the main campus of the Community College of Philadelphia in packs, waiting to hear Frost speak. KC Miller was among them.

“I think it's really inspiring that a young person has taken that role and is crossing the country for Kamala. So I'm really interested to hear what he has to say.”

Mayor Cherelle Parker was on hand to introduce the congressman, and she shared her admiration for the young politician. “For those of you who know me, you know, I'm a truth teller. And I have been fan-girling since he walked through the door,” she said. After local Democrats, including City Council members Isaiah Thomas and Katherine Gilmore Richardson joined him on stage, Frost shared his message with young voters.

The point of campaigns isn’t to make supporters feel comfortable. They want people to contribute by donating and volunteering to GOTV. There is a lot of work to be done if we are going to win this election.

If people feel like everything is in the bag, they may sit back and do nothing. That is a problem. That is why campaign emails so often emphasize how close the race is. That and the fact it’s true.

It’s all hands on deck from now until November.

and it's been that way for years. Republicans are the pro-white establishment party and as such get the extreme white man's pass from white voters. It's why a majority give republicans higher marks for their deficit-busting recession courting handling of the economy. It's why a majority of voters give republicans higher marks for their ham-fisted unsophisticated handling of national security. Those voters only vote for Democrats in the face of catastrophe which is why it's important to spell out what a catastrophe the rapist is.

It helps a lot that Kamala Harris is such a shrewd campaigner, extremely smart, strong, and amazingly popular.

It's women (led by Kamala) who will save us in November. We're going to hit some big numbers in reaction to Roe v Wade being struck down. They don't call it ROEvember for nothing. Women are going to assert their power at the ballot box with a lot of help from us men.

We got that in 2000 & 2004. And 2016 and 2020 were decided by very small margins in just a few states. So get out the vote is very important. Our elections should be a national holiday with paid time off.
