Omaha police: man shot, killed by officer during search warrant was unarmed

An Omaha police officer is under investigation after fatally shooting an unarmed man while serving a no-knock search warrant last week.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said during a press conference Sunday that Officer Adam Vail of the department's SWAT team came face-to-face with the Cameron Ford, named in the search warrant in a very tight hallway and fired one shot, killing Ford. The incident occurred Wednesday at 7 a.m. in the upstairs area of Ford's home near 78th and Redick Avenues.

"Mr. Ford charged out of the (bedroom) and Officer Vail was unable to see his hands," Schmaderer said. "Mr. Ford was shot in the chest through the left side from an estimated five feet away."

Officers immediately began CPR and Ford was pronounced deceased at an Omaha hospital. Schmaderer and members of his command staff first met Sunday with seven members of Ford's family and State Sen. Terrell McKinney, to brief them on the investigation.

"If that was me and I heard someone in the hallway to my bedroom and I didn't hear any doorbell or knock what would I do? Probably go charging out of the bedroom to see who the hell is in my place." Instead their thinking is Mr. Ford was somehow supposed to be able to see through walls in order to not be shot and with that super vision ability he would know to just sit quietly with his hands in the air until the cop got to him. I'm sure that makes perfect sense in cop-world.

here's some more and a link:

- snip - Omaha police said the no-knock search warrant was requested due to Ford's violent criminal history and that he was "likely in possession of a firearm."
"Very high threat assessment," Omaha police chief Todd Schmaderer said.
- snip- Vail was the first officer in the home, and he can clearly be heard yelling "police search warrant!" from his body-worn camera, which was obscured by his ballistics shield, according to Schmaderer.
He then went upstairs and turned left down a hallway, encountering Ford who was exiting the master bedroom, Omaha police said.
Vail then fired one round, hitting Ford in the left side of his chest, from about five feet away Schmaderer said. He said the autopsy showed that Ford's spinal cord was severed.
Ford was not armed at the time that he was shot, Omaha police said.
- snip - The family told Omaha police that there may be hidden cameras in the house, Schmaderer said. Cameras in plain sight in the house were "confiscated" after the incident.
Omaha police said an semi automatic AR-15 style rifle loaded with 31 rounds of live ammunition, about 46 grams of suspected fentanyl powder, 816 fentanyl pills, nearly 300 grams of marijuana, and narcotics sales equipment were among the evidence seized from the scene.

It's plain and simple: they fully intended to kill anyone they encountered. Looks great in the movies but this isn't Judge Dredd. Tired of cops getting a pass for summary executions.

One of the cornerstones of a civilized society is the rule of law. Without it it's just anarchy and kill or be killed. That is what people like Trump want. That is no way to run a country. We need to stop giving cops a pass for pulling the trigger on unarmed people or people just existing in their own homes.
We can't keep living like this.
