The Barrow County Sheriffs Office confirms there have been multiple casualties after a shooting at Apalachee High School Wednesday morning.
The sheriff could not confirm how many casualties or the victims conditions.
The incident unfolded around 10:20 a.m. when officers from multiple agencies and Fire/EMS personnel were dispatched to the high school after reports of an active shooter.
NewsChopper 2 was over the scene, where there were dozens of law enforcement and emergency vehicles surrounding the school. At least one air ambulance took a patient from the scene. Georgia State Patrol troopers as well as deputies from Barrow and Winder counties were responding.

This is in Georgia, by the way, approximately 50 miles northeast of Atlanta.
Another fucking school shooting.
How the hell many will it take before GQPers understand that not every damned idiot out there needs to have a gun?

(7,630 posts)And the rotten bastards got away with it. One can pretty well trace mass-shooting madness back to the corruption, cynicism and irresponsibility of the Supreme Court under conservative majorities. These psuchotic monsters were nominated by corrupt conservative executives throwing red meat to their base and approved by corrupt and stupid Republican Senators........because they wanted to be president, too. All of them on a power trip from hell. Thanks Limbaugh.

Round up immigrants into camps for deportation, increase the number of offenses that get the death penalty (whether violent or not), return to mandatory Bible reading and prayer in public schools, make Christianity the national religion, and impose martial law against public protests.

(1,253 posts)This incident is precisely why Putin used Maria Butina to support and fund the NRA. He wants Americans to kill themselves daily bit by bit in a warzone. 44,431 Americans died last year from guns.
Thank you GOP, NRA, and ALEC for enabling Putin.

(24,621 posts)and he flat out said that the Republican party embraces murder. He went on to talk about how TSF, if elected, will allow militias to hunt down undocumented workers and or documented workers and send them to concentration camps. Nance went on to say that these millions of people also have guns and will not go quietly, it will be a civil war if TSF wins.

(24,147 posts)He says that it won't be just documented and undocumented immigrants and migrants. They will kill off political opponents who are American citizens and anyone who disagrees with them.
I have been fearing that possibility because of the belligerence of their speech and threats, plus their actions like using gas and rubber bullets to clear the street for TSF's Bible photo OP in front of a church and the secretive kidnapping of protesters in Portland's BLM demonstrations, not to mention J6.
So when an expert like Nance verifies what I've been seeing and perceiving, I take it seriously. I also think that the extreme right which backs TSF will try to seize office if he loses and will use planned, organized violence to do it
I want to be wrong. I hope that I am. I want to see Harris and Walz win peacefully and take us in a better direction. But the fanatical belligerence of the right makes me feel like we are headed for a physical showdown.

(5,989 posts)I read on another post that when the shooting began, the teacher locked the door, and had all the kids get on the floor, as recommended. Then there was frantic knocking on the door, someone yelling "Let me in", and then more shooting.
In my training, you are not supposed to open the door under those circumstances. If those folks got shot, that poor class will have so much more trauma.
Very chilling. I pray I never have to make that decision.

(20,803 posts)and possibly their voice would be recognized. That is great unless the student is the shooter. Then it is a problem.
The reason to not open the door is there is no way to know if it is the shooter until it is too late.

Or, another day and yet another two year old finds a loaded gun at home and shoots sibling.
I don't understand why anyone from a country with sensible gun laws (just about every place except the UAE) would ever come to this country.

(290 posts)I took pictures of him on the front porch this morning, as he headed out to catch the bus. This afternoon is his first home high school soccer game. He made JV, and he is so excited. All the kids, so excited about a new school year. It is so tragic that we go through this so many times every year - rinse and repeat. My older grandson had a shooter in his high school up in Washington State a couple years ago before he moved here to Oregon. He called me from the school and told me how terrified he was as he was sitting in the cafeteria and felt so vulnerable. He ran and ran until he could hide in a portable classroom. My husband, now retired, was a city manager for a nearby city here in Oregon. They had a shooter in that community's high school in 2014 and one student, a 9th grade soccer player, was killed. It was horrific. I met his mother at a service honoring the first responders. There were no words that could console her. I am so sick of guns.

(424 posts)What the fuck is a 14 year old doing with an automatic weapon at a school? How did a 14 year old get access to that gun? It's long past time to hold negligent parents criminally responsible for the criminal behavior of their minor children especially when they allow access to automatic weapons. It's past time to prosecute these criminal enablers. How many "innocent" people have to die just because some fucking assholes think that everyone should have an automatic weapon or access to automatic weapons?

(12,136 posts)Australia had one mass shooting and decided that was enough. They enacted strict gun laws that said you had to have a damned good reason to have a gun permit, and so called "self defense" wasn't a good reason. They've virtually eliminated gun violence, incidents are few and far between.
Why is the so called "right to bear arms (and let's not forget about a well regulated militia)" so much more important than our children's right to live?

Given all the surreal things weve seen since Columbine, it isnt so surreal to think that someday providing a box of ammo to the teacher will be on school supply lists.
Gun laws are not the third rail they used to be politically at least not as far as the Democratic Party is concerned. All the more reason to elect Kamala and Tim, and win back control of the House and get a bigger majority in the Senate. Purging the GOP scourge at all levels is the only way out of a lot of this shit, not just guns.
Finally, to all those deeply saddened pols who say its too soon, but heres some thoughts and prayers shove it.

(1,253 posts)In an average year in Georgia, 1,927 people die and 5,029 are wounded by firearms. The Peachtree State has the 8th-highest rate of gun violence in the US. Gun deaths and injuries cost Georgia $23.9 billion each year, of which $597.8 million is paid by taxpayers.

My kid is terrified to go back to school tomorrow because they don't want to get shot... and I can't blame them. I'm scared too. They shouldn't have to deal with this. What am I even supposed to say to that? This isn't right. Our kids deserve better than this.
