Locals accuse Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump of 'taking what is ours' for billion-dollar resort project in Albania

Source: The Independent

Local residents in Albania are accusing Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump of attempting to take land away from them for two luxury resort projects.

The daughter and son-in-law of former President Donald Trump are looking to invest almost $1bn in the area. Kushner previously announced his plans to build a hotel and a number of beach villas on a part of land that has been farmed by an Albanian family for generations but which was seized from them after the end of the Communist regime in 1991, according to The New York Times.

“They are trying to take from us what is ours,” Bledar Alexandros Konomi told the paper. Konomi used to help take care of cattle on the part of the mainland where Kushner now wants to build a hotel. His claim to the land is supported by court records. Kushner is also seeking exclusive development rights on the small island of Sazan, where the Soviet Union stored military supplies during the Cold War.

A second bid to develop the island has been submitted by an Albanian-American developer from New York, documents obtained by The Times show. Developer Evi Kokalari-Angelakis told the paper that the Albanian government has disregarded her proposal to ingratiate themselves with the former president in the event he returns to office in January.

The Trump family pays as little as possible, so locals will pay for the roads, water, electricity, and of course the airport so billionaires can fly their private jets to spend a couple of weeks each year playing golf and hobnobbing with other billionaires. Only the few locals who will have jobs there will be allowed anywhere near their luxury resort. I doubt the local economy will see much benefit from any Trump-Kushner project. They mostly take, not give.

If it works for Donald, it'll work for Jared. Fuck the natives, they're just peasants.

Look at the resort in Scotland and how that worked out for the locals. Land was definitely stolen and fouled if it couldn't be acquired on their terms. It's what they want to do to Gaza. There's a distinct pattern here.

This monstrosity sill suck up farmland and pave it over with a highway but neglect to plan for housing or mass transit for the little people they need to change the sheets or mow the greens, the little people are on their own. The lack of adequate staff means poor service and lack of proper maintenance, so that when the big tax breaks end, the place will be falling apart already and the parasites will move on to some other small country with a balmy climate and a government that wants to be seen doing something to end poverty.

These things suck up government money and prevent public works projects from going forward. They provide nothing for a coyuntry or its people. Too many governments, including ours, fails to ask some hard questions about where staff is supposed to live, how they're supposed to get there, and what any project for the rich is going to do for anyone else.

Rich twits only think about outdoing each other on building party spaces for other rich twits to admire for a season or two.

Nothing like a little sabotage to ruin a resort project.

It is far better to tie them up in red tape by forcing the questions I asked about supporting the staff, making sure the maintenance gets done, and making sure farmers whose land is buried under concrete and sand traps are compensated both with money and increased services. Nothing will discourage a rich twit faster than having to consider anyone out of his/her class as having any rights, at all.

'Kushner is also seeking exclusive development rights on the small island of Sazan, where the Soviet Union stored military supplies during the Cold War.'

Wouldn't you expect a place like that to be contaminated with all kinds of bad stuff? Not that Kushner would be concerned about anyone else's potential health problems.

If the farmers haven't established ownership of the land by now, then I hate to say it - they never will.

In the US, 33 years is an entire generation. Most home mortgages are paid off in less than 33 years.

It's not that I'm rooting for Ivanka and Jared, because I'm not. They're greedy weasels. But someone will have bought that land by now, whether it's the Kushners or someone else. The Albanians who previously owned the property should have straightened this out 30 years ago.
