SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) Construction is getting underway on a state-funded reproductive health and abortion clinic in southern New Mexico that will cater to local residents and people who travel from neighboring states such as Texas and Oklahoma with major restrictions on abortion, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced Thursday.
Construction of the clinic will draw upon $10 million in state funding that was set aside by the governor under a 2022 executive order. New Mexico has one of the countrys most liberal abortion-access laws. Lujan Grisham, a second-term Democrat who cant run again in 2026, reiterated her commitment to shoring up abortion access in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade and revoked universal access to abortion.
Access to reproductive healthcare should be a fundamental human right, Lujan Grisham said in a statement. Once completed, this clinic will stand as a testament to our states commitment to reproductive freedom for residents of New Mexico, and also those who travel here from out-of-state in need of this care.
New Mexico accompanies Democratic-led states from California to New Jersey that are underwriting efforts to bolster abortion services and protections.

(21 posts)Here in southern NM there are more Texans than New Mexicans. They come here for jobs and flood the pot shops. They ski at our ski resorts and bad mouth New Mexico. They tear up the country side on their off road vehicles and hunt in our mountains but obnoxiously shout how much they love Texas.
Wonder Why
(4,572 posts)I spent 10 of my 12 years of military service in NM defending the United States against those Barbarians from the East.
Oh, BTW, you forgot to mention that they take our water. In Texas, you can own land but you may or may not own the rights to drill for water because the land was sold w/o water rights. El Paso wanted to put in huge pipes from NM because they didn't have enough water rights for their population. We fought them in the Courts and won. A huge victory for humankind over the alien creatures from the East.
And that was before they degenerated into "Them" (1950s movie) as they have since become.

In there, was a link to the Governor's order (PDF) - https://www.governor.state.nm.us/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Executive-Order-2022-123.pdf which mentions "Dona Ana County" (so probably La Cruces).

(141,321 posts)which has been threatening interstate travel (and this would be closer to those western and central TX cities). They will probably do other locations further north along the border, including closer to OK.

(14,311 posts)Probably not long, but N. Mexico will tell TX to fuck off and die and will continue on with the construction.
Good on N. Mexico for providing these needed services for residents in states like TX, OK, etc., who are doing everything they can to keep their residents from traveling to a state that has their backs.
