Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito disclosed on Friday that he accepted $900 worth of concert tickets gifted by a German princess.
The tickets given to Alito by socialite Gloria von Thurn und Taxis were disclosed in an annual financial form that all justices must complete. The other justices filed their financial disclosures in June, but Alito received an extension.
Alito also reported some stock salesincluding between $1,000 and $15,000 of Anheuser Busch, which owns Bud Light, stock sold in August 2023and a 2015 loan from financial service company Edward D. Jones that was originally worth between $250,000 and $500,000 but has now been mostly paid off.
Alito did not report any outside income from teaching or book contracts. Meanwhile, several justices reported six-figure payments from book deals in their financial disclosures.

(2,595 posts)along with other justices more power to them. It is their right to sell a book if they wish. It is influence peddling we are searching for.
I don't like the way this article is written, there's no meat here.

(9,689 posts)A $250,000+ loan in less than 10 years? To me that is a thread worth pulling.

(2,595 posts)I mean he and his wife make more than that so it's not impossible at all. If we're going to attack him for gifts, grifts and bribes lets find something more substantial than that.

(5,577 posts)has about a dozen "revised submissions" over the next few years for just this year's filing. Many of the political candidates do the same thing with revision after revision. They should all have to hire accounting firms if we are going to continue to allow all this money into elections. Timely filings and no excuses.

(4,594 posts)Under the Constitution, no government official can accept a gift from a foreign government, unless it is approved by Congress.
Emalouments clause: [N]o Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them [i.e., the United States], shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince, or foreign State.
Accepting a gift from a foreign Prince , without the consent of Congress, is failing to uphold the Constitution. Thats impeachable.
Bring it up now.

(352 posts)She is a commoner with no role in the German government. Prinessin von Thurn und Taxis is legally her surname, not a title.
I think it would be difficult to place this gift under the Emoluments Clause.
The only reason this is getting the press it is that many Americans are fascinated by nobility/royalty and don't understand the fanciful nature of German "royalty".
I would imagine there are Emoluments the various Justices have accepted and would love to see an enforceable ethics policy placed on them.

(1,477 posts)I'm surprised they just don't accept anything, period.* I'm surprised they all don't just say, "Nope. I can't accept any gratuity of any kind." It's not like they need the perks or $$. Book deals and such are fine, IMO. They're making something and getting paid for it (unless, of course, someone with something to gain is paying them through the book deal in some kind of shady pay-to-play thing).
*not actually surprised b/c we all know who these conservatives justices are

(219 posts)A long time ago in 2009,
I watched the State of the Union address by President Obama.
Alito acted like an ass, even before The Dumpster came along.
Now I know is a bigger ASS than I thought he was.
He and his wife are a disgrace to the USSC and America.
Thomas is even more disgusting disgrace as is his wife.
We need to be able to do something about these horribly dishonest jurists!!!
