Jimmy Carter 'talking about politics again' since Kamala Harris became Democratic nominee

Former President Jimmy Carter is talking about politics again following the ascension of Vice President Kamala Harris to the top of the Democratic ticket. After my grandmother passed, he had a pretty long low period when he wasnt really engaging much at all, his eldest grandchild Jason Carter told The Washington Post. But now hes talking about politics again.
Two members of the Carter family told the paper that after the death of his wife, former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, in November last year, his health has worsened. He has been in hospice for 18 months. As he watched President Joe Biden announce that he wasnt seeking re-election, he said, Thats sad.
But he has recently been talking more and engaging others about the 2024 race for the White House, apparently buoyed by the progress of the Harris campaign. James Carter III, who goes by Chip, told The Post that the former president watched all of the speeches from the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. He thought Michelle Obama was the best, and he thought Kamala was great, too, the presidents son told the paper.
Carter is set to turn 100 on October 1, and several events have been planned, including a concert in Atlanta and a 100-mile bike ride close to his hometown of Plains, Georgia. Chip Carter told his father that many think hes trying to stay alive to reach his birthday, something the former president rejected. He said he didnt care about that. Its just a birthday. He said he cared about voting for Kamala Harris, Chip Carter told The Post.

(3,213 posts)Harris will push LBJ to #5 for his Civil Rights / Great Society legislation and Clinton #6. Then I remember not only the Civil Rights and Great Society legislation but Vietnam and they switch places. I remember my father doing TDY at Anderson on Guam and visiting U-Tapau in Thailand regularly as part of his duties with the 8th AF. I remember lying awake in bed hearing B-52 after B-52 head for the SEA Theater. I remember Mom driving to Edwards AFB to pick him up during a short leave and the Beetle's headlights illuminating the endless road thru the California desert. So yeah, while he did much good, the bad in many ways outweighed it. He gave us Nixon.

(2,514 posts)I often think about his statement on "losing the South for a generation" after civil rights and voting rights legislation. He was wrong! It's been several generations, but hopefully we'll get Georgia and North Carolina back. At least this time around.
