Hillary Clinton's Debate Advice To Kamala Harris: Trump 'Can Be Rattled,' 'Bait Him'

Source: Huff Post

Sep 7, 2024, 02:45 PM EDT

Hillary Clinton offered Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris straightforward advice for taking on GOP rival Donald Trump at the upcoming presidential debate: Bait him.

Clinton, who lost the 2016 White House race to Trump, said in a New York Times interview published Saturday that the Republican “is going with a scorched-earth approach and will just try to tear her [Harris] down, which is his usual go-to strategy.”

To combat Trump, Clinton suggested that Harris go on the offensive, arguing that this would hit directly at Trump’s weaknesses.

“She just should not be baited. She should bait him. He can be rattled,” Clinton told the Times. “He doesn’t know how to respond to substantive, direct attacks.”

mute mic scenario ?

I was thinking that the pushing for the open mic, knowing that he'd shoot it down, would just bait him into interrupting anyway and having the questioner continually admonishing him

I think Hillary is right about this. Chump gets all screamy angry because then his opponent gets flustered. He loves making his opponent look weak (like he did to Biden) as they try to deny something really stupid and pointless.

But Kamala can turn it around and challenge him with something BIG that he doesn't want to talk about.

Don't let him wiggle out of it, make him answer the question. Turn the tables on Chump and he can't handle it. He's not smart enough nor is he quick enough.

5. Do the debate like a courtroom. It is something BOTH are vastly familiar with

so there wouldn't be any problem would there?

However, I think she would be vastly more comfortable in such a setting than he would be.

He tends to fall asleep and fart in courtrooms.

7. I hope she only calls him "Donald."

Apparently he hates that. I gather his mother called him that when correcting him. For whatever reason, he always refers to himself in the third person as "Trump." Call him Donald. Like he's a child not worthy of respect.

This all has a bit of a deja vu feel, we were so sure he would make a fool of himself against Biden, and look what happened. I hope this goes better and we aren't all sad the next day.

12. Trump -- er, Donald -- can actually appear somewhat coherent in short bursts.

Stylistically, anyway — which is worth about 85 out of 100 in mainstream media evaluations of debate performance. Everyone expecting him to do nothing but Gish gallop, spew insults, and rant like a lunatic must have a short memory. This won’t be Rally Trump, it will be a Trump who’s relatively prepared (for him), heavily coached, and medicated with the right mix to get him through this.

He will, of course, lie his ass off and back up none of his claims with facts, but that’s baseline for him. For him, this will be another reality TV show episode, and he can act well enough to sustain a performance that fools many low-information voters.

I agree with Hillary’s recommendation to try to rattle him, but remember, he got deep enough into the debate with Biden to convey semi-non-lunacy for a while, until the casual viewers had tuned out and turned off the spectacle. Kamala needs to hit him hard and early, and needle him with the triggers that are known to bring him to apoplexy.

It’s a tough challenge for anybody, but I believe with her experience as a high-stakes prosecutor in difficult cases she has what it takes to win this debate handily.

I posted on an earlier thread about Kamala baiting the hook with such a tasty morsel,he will take it all, hook ,line and sinker.

TruTurn hooks have a cantilever action. Believe me,once these are swallowed,it's curtains.

It would help of course but the trap she needs to avoid falling into is using the entire time to answer the question. Answer it quickly and succinctly then bait him. On the rebuttal this would work better but she can do it on both. She needs to goad him on each thing
