Mark Robinson skipped vote to declare Hurricane Helene a state of emergency

Source: The Guardian

Wed 2 Oct 2024 11.47 EDT

Mark Robinson, North Carolina’s lieutenant governor and Republican gubernatorial candidate, skipped a vote on declaring a state of emergency in advance of Hurricane Helene’s arrival to the southern state, according to a report.

Robinson, who has been under attack recently over alleged racist and explicit posts on a pornography website’s message board, was the only council of state member who did not vote on Democratic governor Roy Cooper’s emergency declaration, WRAL News reported.

Cooper sought the declaration from top North Carolina electeds in the state’s executive branch on 24 September so he could mobilize a robust response to Helene. The vote enabled Cooper to more easily mobilize rescue vehicles and issue evacuation orders.

Eight of the nine council of state members voted for the declaration, according to WRAL – everyone except for Robinson. Cooper has since sent more than 700 members of North Carolina’s national guard to areas reeling from the wrath of Helene, which has left at least 166 dead and hundreds missing in six states; Joe Biden also green-lighted the governor’s request for expedited federal help.

Robinson said it was going to pass regardless of his vote . Also showed Robinson loading supplies for WNC and mentioned he was complaining about Gov Cooper’s response to emergency procedures to help in WNC.
Mentioned ex Gov mccrory R saying Robinson shouldn’t be criticizing Cooper during the crisis …

Don’t know why the loser is getting airtime

Claiming it was going to pass regardless tells you all you need to know about this RW lunatic fraud, who somehow managed to get elected to office.

Need as much as we can.

Wished we could have gotten Beasley in for 2022. Tillis is up in 2026 so that needs to be a target.

Some states (like here in PA) have state legislature seats up during the same years as Congressional and/Presidential elections and others might be "off year". If there is some important referendums, that might drive turnout up a bit more than normal.

I figure GOPers are going to be doing ticket-splitting there.

Of course the biggest issue there right now, particularly for western NC, is even having a place to vote, let alone a place to live (I saw some article about how they are still pushing ahead to find some kind of workable solution for voting in those impacted areas).

Mark Robinson is so un-deserving to be Governor it isn't even funny. He has spent the last 4 years trying to undo every good thing his own Governor Roy Cooper has tried to do. I don't think there's been a civil word between them in 4 years. This is no way to run a state. The Governor and Lt. Governor need to run on the same ticket and be elected together as a team.

Hopefully Josh Stein will win this and have a better working relationship with the NEXT Lieutenant Governor. Mark Robinson needs to go away.
