Bank of America is down: Customers report widespread outage

Source: CNN Business

Updated 2:20 PM EDT, Wed October 2, 2024

CNN — Bank of America customers report having trouble accessing their bank accounts on Wednesday. Reports about a problem at Bank of America spiked around 12:45 pm ET on Downdetector, which collects data on outages.

Many customers complained they could not see their account balances. Some who could access their accounts were startled to see zero balances.

Bank of America did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Multiple CNN employees with Bank of America accounts could not log into their accounts online. A message displayed for one Bank of America customer said the current balance amount for one or multiple accounts “may be temporarily unavailable.”

End of month/beginning of month is often horrible due to IT system updates/changes/deployments (plus it's the beginning of a new quarter).

Low & behold, they were correct. I got onto the site, but couldn't do anything. Several tries over time, same issue. Then, like magic, everything worked again. Did consider that the bank may have been dealing with a hack, but figured just maintenance or something. Now, thinking hack again.

It was bad enough when the cloud went down in July and gas stations and ATM machines were down for a couple of days. Our niece was setting out for a five hour drive to Wilmington, NC and didn't have a nickel of cash on her (I gave her some). Fast forward two months and no one in western North Carolina can use an ATM and most stores are cash only. Now BoA goes down. I use cards for most stuff, but I am simply not going to be caught without cash on hand.

I was getting some cash and the B of A ATM did not dispense the cash and kept my card. The staff of bank where the ATM said there was nothing they could as when it eats the card, it shreds it. Now my bank is overnighting me a new one.

I really do not like B of A.

it has many interesting twists and turns. There have even been questions over the years about whether there have been/are problems with their keeping to the terms of their charter. But for those who are experiencing problems today with disappearing accounts etc. don't worry because someone at BOA has maybe created several with your name that you don't even know about. So you might have more than you think..............or maybe way less. But who needs accuracy because after all it's just a bank right? Hey to make up for this hassle BOA will probably come out and offer an extra 500 reward points when you buy your next floral purchase.
