The chairman of a House Homeland Security subcommittee is asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency to detail what it did to prepare for Hurricane Helene after it became clear there would be catastrophic flooding.
Helene made landfall in Big Bend, Florida, on Sept. 26, causing flooding that devastated North Carolina, Tennessee and other Southern states and claimed more than 200 lives.
In a letter sent Saturday, Rep. Anthony DEsposito, chairman of the House Emergency Management and Technology Subcommittee, asked FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell for information regarding FEMAs advanced forecasting models, its pre-positioning of resources, and its coordination with federal, state, and local partners in response.
A spokesperson for FEMA confirmed to NBC News that the agency received the letter and will work with Congress on Hurricane Helene efforts.

(2,322 posts)Clinton left office with a budget surplus, but when Bush took office, he threw that away, to give tax cuts for his rich friends. So he then had to cut the budget to make up for the shortfall. For 3 years, Bush underfunded a Levee repair program that already was in progress, bad enough to stop work on the levee that failed and flooded New Orleans.

(54,008 posts)FEMAs disaster relief fund is staring down a nearly $2 billion deficit at the end of the month, and the agency has been in immediate-needs mode for weeks, having to hold back billions of dollars that could go to rebuilding projects in order to support more urgent life-saving work.
The CR approved Wednesday would extend FEMAs current funding level through Dec. 20, and would allow the agency to more quickly draw from that funding to meet current needs. But the agencys latest monthly report projects that money from the CR will last only through January and that the fund will still face a $3 billion deficit by February.

Regarding failures
lets talk about a party who has indoctrinated a cult of people not to listen to the media or any climate news.

(16,160 posts)They have no idea how to do anything positive for America. As far as I'm concerned, the Republican Party is the equivalent to the Nazi Party of 1932 on. If the Shitler has his way, or his vice, JD Dunce, the Republican Party would be declared the only political party in the USA. These fuckers are evil. They seek total and indefinite control over each and every one of us.
Now, I don't think this will actually happen, but I am fully convinced that, given the opportunity, that is exactly what they would do. We need to blow them out of the water in November and then relentlessly go after and prosecute the criminality within their party so that this never doesn't just happen again in 2028, 2032 and hopefully our life times.

(17,384 posts)point well made.
They don't actually care about the death toll, just about being able to hold hearings and grandstand.
What were they supposed to do? Force people to evacuate? If they had done that, there would still be hearings.

(17,157 posts)Years of hearings on Benghazi. Attacks on Dr. Fauci when he's spent decades trying to save lives (I was going to use the expression "save their sorry asses," but that seemed unkind).
And given that Republicans are not pushing for climate change mitigation, this is just more performative rage from the party of performative rage. On top of that, there's the matter of what Project 2025 would do to the country and the world.
