House GOP chairman demands FEMA accountability for Hurricane Helene after flooding claims more than 200 lives

Source: NBC News

Oct. 5, 2024, 4:10 PM EDT

The chairman of a House Homeland Security subcommittee is asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency to detail what it did to prepare for Hurricane Helene after it became clear there would be catastrophic flooding.

Helene made landfall in Big Bend, Florida, on Sept. 26, causing flooding that devastated North Carolina, Tennessee and other Southern states and claimed more than 200 lives.

In a letter sent Saturday, Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, chairman of the House Emergency Management and Technology Subcommittee, asked FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell for “information regarding FEMA’s advanced forecasting models, its pre-positioning of resources, and its coordination with federal, state, and local partners in response.”

A spokesperson for FEMA confirmed to NBC News that the agency received the letter and will work with Congress on Hurricane Helene efforts.

... when you deliberately refuse and fail to timely fund the government. Take a good hard look into any mirror, Republican Nazi Party because you are the proximate cause of these tragedies. Keep ignoring and keep denying "climate change," Republican assholes!

Clinton left office with a budget surplus, but when Bush took office, he threw that away, to give tax cuts for his rich friends. So he then had to cut the budget to make up for the shortfall. For 3 years, Bush underfunded a Levee repair program that already was in progress, bad enough to stop work on the levee that failed and flooded New Orleans.

Indeed, as the House and Senate’s top four leaders met last weekend to negotiate a deal to keep the government funded, they were forced to acquiesce to the demands of Congress’ most conservative fiscal hawks, whose votes were thought to be pivotal for passage. They quietly stripped the CR of almost all supplemental funding, including for FEMA, according to multiple House appropriators.

FEMA’s disaster relief fund is staring down a nearly $2 billion deficit at the end of the month, and the agency has been in “immediate-needs” mode for weeks, having to hold back billions of dollars that could go to rebuilding projects in order to support more urgent life-saving work.

The CR approved Wednesday would extend FEMA’s current funding level through Dec. 20, and would allow the agency to more quickly draw from that funding to meet current needs. But the agency’s latest monthly report projects that money from the CR will last only through January and that the fund will still face a $3 billion deficit by February.

Project 2025 would end all of the resources provided by the government.

Regarding failures…let’s talk about a party who has indoctrinated a cult of people not to listen to the media or any climate news.

They have no idea how to do anything positive for America. As far as I'm concerned, the Republican Party is the equivalent to the Nazi Party of 1932 on. If the Shitler has his way, or his vice, JD Dunce, the Republican Party would be declared the only political party in the USA. These fuckers are evil. They seek total and indefinite control over each and every one of us.

Now, I don't think this will actually happen, but I am fully convinced that, given the opportunity, that is exactly what they would do. We need to blow them out of the water in November and then relentlessly go after and prosecute the criminality within their party so that this never doesn't just happen again in 2028, 2032 and hopefully our life times.

Milton is bearing down on Florida, Johnson closed down the Senate without funding FEMA. So what governor do you think will go screaming to FEMA for money, and suddenly the Repubs will pass a FEMA funding bill?

point well made.

They don't actually care about the death toll, just about being able to hold hearings and grandstand.

What were they supposed to do? Force people to evacuate? If they had done that, there would still be hearings.

Years of hearings on Benghazi. Attacks on Dr. Fauci when he's spent decades trying to save lives (I was going to use the expression "save their sorry asses," but that seemed unkind).

And given that Republicans are not pushing for climate change mitigation, this is just more performative rage from the party of performative rage. On top of that, there's the matter of what Project 2025 would do to the country and the world.
