Milton rapidly strengthened in the Gulf of Mexico on Monday and was forecast to become a Category 5 storm on a path toward Florida, threatening a dangerous storm surge in Tampa Bay and setting the stage for potential mass evacuations less than two weeks after a catastrophic Hurricane Helene swamped the coastline.
A hurricane warning was issued for parts of Mexico's Yucatan state, and much of Florida's west coast was under hurricane and storm surge watches. Florida's Lake Okeechobee, which often floods during intense storms, was also under a hurricane watch.

Just breaking with the latest NHC update. It is literally about 2 mph short of being a Cat 5 right now, with sustained winds of 155 mph.

(3,974 posts)The Governor has to play it cool to get whatever help the Biden Administration can give, limited by the GOP shorting the FEMA budget and punting on expanding it with an emergency resolution. Right wing media will be claiming the same B$ as they are about NC.

The tip of the Yucatan probably hasn't been much fun the past few days.

If it hits/scrapes along the Yucatan peninsula, that might knock it down some. But then that might also tear the living hell out of Cancun.

(43,098 posts)Milton, a top-tier Category 5 hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico, is intensifying at breakneck speed as it churns toward the west coast of Florida. The storm is expected to make landfall Wednesday or early Thursday as a large and powerful hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. It is predicted to produce a potentially devastating ocean surge over 10 feet in some areas, including perhaps in flood-prone Tampa Bay

Then 2 years after we moved into a new townhome we had to build, husband asked me if I wanted to move to FLA. What? NO!! Not ready for same year round weather with no 4 seasons. Who knew my stance would prove to be providential in the future. Not to say I'm profoundly troubled by what's going to transpire down there. We have former friends n church sisters n brothers right there in the exact location.

(576 posts)Maybe, Joe Biden can throw out rolls of paper towels to the people of Florida just like the Turd did to the people of Puerto Rico? Maybe, Kamala Harris can take out a black Sharpie pen and divert Hurricane Milton on a map just like the Turd did? Of course, the only real Republican Nazi Party solution is to offer massive "tax breaks" to Florida's millionaires and billionaires so that they and other Republican Oligarchs, once they receive those "tax cuts," will be able to generously "help" the victims of Hurricane Milton and when the "economic benefits" of all those Republican "tax breaks" trickles down to the victims -- everyone will be able to rebuild their lives without the government's intervention through FEMA. Only a radical Marxist, Communist like Komrade Kamala would quarrel with "tax breaks" capitalism for the entitled and deserving rich!

(9,814 posts)The storm, now about 700 miles from the state, rapidly strengthened from Category 2 to 5 in just a few hours Monday. By Tuesday, Milton's intensity "should be dictated by any eyewall replacement cycles, which will likely cause the system to gradually weaken but grow larger," the NHC said.
