Johnson: Additional hurricane aid 'can wait' until Congress is back in session

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Sunday said passing additional hurricane aid for states impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton can wait until Congress is back in session after the election. CBS Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan asked him why he thinks its fine to wait until November for Congress to pass more aid for Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton victims.
Well, it can wait because, remember, the day before Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida and then went up through the states and wound up in Senator Tilliss state of North Carolina, Congress appropriated 20 billion additional dollars to FEMA so that they would have the necessary resources to address immediate needs, Johnson said.
Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) was part of a bipartisan group of senators to sign a letter urging Senate leaders to think about bringing lawmakers back into session this month to enact disaster legislation before the end of the year.
House lawmakers have also urged Johnson to bring the chamber back into session. A group of Democrats sent a letter last week asking him to do so, and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) posted on the social media platform X, If Congress goes into a special session we can get it passed immediately. This needs to happen. @SpeakerJohnson call us back.

(1,286 posts)Trump's tactics are incredibly cynical and exploit the ignorance of his followers. Although that could be said about Republicans for the longest time. Trump has been incredible at exploiting what Republicans previously laid the groundwork for.

In other words, play politics with peoples lives, just like Jesus would do.

Ther's no need for panic, these glacially-ponderous-but-seemingly-inevitable aspects of modern concern are merely reminders that civilization is a process, not a destination. Wisdom is wearing the proper PPE.

soles? well, tar heels refers to, by some, to the north carolina soldiers refusal to retreat during battle. this was told to me by a high school classmate who was the son of a north carolina congressman.

Just as an unknowing passenger in a car driven by someone who murdered a convenience store clerk, the unknowing passenger is held just as liable for the murder. By the same token, those who support a traitor, and actively do his bidding, should also be considered traitors, and be dealt with accordingly. I'm lookin' at YOU, Mikey, you miserable little shit.

House Speaker Mike Johnson diverted from answering questions about violence after the election, saying the "greater issue" is with election integrity. "There's a lot of great work that's been done at the federal, state and local level to prevent the chaos that ensued after 2020, the COVID election year," Johnson said. - Aired on 10/13/2024.
