Two months ago, Jason Carter, grandson of former president Jimmy Carter, reported to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the aging president had told his family he wanted to live long enough to cast his vote for Kamala Harris....
Early voting begins in Carter's home state of Georgia on Tuesday, meaning Carter has achieved his goal and made it long enough to vote for Vice President Harris....

Now wouldn't it be something for President Carter to live to see Kamala win!

(11,973 posts)How would election officials know which ballot to not count?
Fiendish Thingy
(18,766 posts)Somebody posted a link awhile back, showing how this is common practice in many states, at least for mail in ballots, not sure about in person early voting.
Most mail in ballots have personal identification info on the outer envelope, which can be checked against death certificates between the postmark and election day.
I dont think mail in ballots are opened and validated until election day.

(22,850 posts)Nothing would tickle Repugs sillier than throwing away Jimmy Carter's vote - and for added kicks, making sure the public finds out (but after November 5th, of course).
"You'd do that to a 100 year-old man!?" a Democrat might ask.
"Well, sure," they gurgle back at you. "Plus we know he's in no condition to complain!"
OMGWTF
(4,479 posts)independently verified. The votes are then tabulated at 8pm on election day.
Eight states have 100% mail-in voting. It works great -- you can take your time, no long lines to wait in, no pesky scanners with proprietary software that skew votes, you can vote at your kitchen table, and best of all, there's a paper trail. The US military has been voting by mail since the Civil War.

(1,207 posts)That if President Carter passes away before Nov 5 his vote won't count.
He was alive when he voted, so of course it would count. To say otherwise cannot be argued, and if GA tries, you can be sure a lawsuit would slap it down.

(12,906 posts)Ive seen that notion in other threads. Its important to set the record straight.
Does your vote count if you die before Election Day? Here's what Georgia law says (WSB-TV, Atlanta:

Heres the money quote:
You cant go back and get that ballot back out. Its just physically impossible, given the privacy rules in our state, Sterling said.

(5,912 posts)To vote early, it shouldnt matter if you pass away before OFFICIAL Election Day. You legally cast your ballot during the early voting window. I voted last week by mail and it will count as if I voted Nov. 5th at my precinct.
Thats my common sense take on the matter. Of course, GA (or any other state) might have twisted common sense to suit their own purposes. Lets hope that common sense prevails. There are enough shenanigans going on these days trying to stop some of us from legally casting our ballot. 😉
