Nebraska Supreme Court rules people who have completed felony convictions can register to vote

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Nebraska Supreme Court ruled that people who have completed their felony conviction sentences can register to vote in the November election under a new state law.

In a split decision, five of seven justices ruled that Secretary of State Bob Evnen was wrong to pause registrations under LB 20 without a court having decided if it was unconstitutional.

Earlier this year, the legislature passed LB 20, immediately restoring the voting rights of people who completed their felony convictions. Before it became law, Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers issued an opinion saying the bill violated the state constitution. Evnen then directed election officials in the state to stop letting felons register to vote.

Now, the ACLU and Civic Nebraska are blasting the message across the state: If you're off the terms of your felony sentence, you are now eligible to vote. "It has worked to suppress many, many people's voices," Jason Whitmer, from ACLU of Nebraska, said.

Are all former felons Democratic voters? Is that why it will "sway" the election? The headline is insinuating that Harris-Walz can't win NE CD-02 without their votes. The AP reporting always sneaks in those partisan jabs at Democrats 🙄

has to do with certain demographic groups who have been charged with that in a disproportionate fashion, and tend to be groups that would support Democrats. I.e., AAs.

And I fixed the link - AP had a story about this as well and I had that in a tab next to the KETV story and stuck the wrong link in the OP!!

might be the J6 miscreants, as they would be expecting some kind of "pardon" (for federal crimes), and similar from governors in GOP loon-run states for state crimes.

But the rest? Not so sure, which is why the GOP has been fighting this so. They know who they locked up unless they have a strategy of "pay to play" to let them out in exchange for votes...

"on the outside" to get votes, so all that is left (other than those 6ft under), are those "behind bars".

Whereas, AP had to put their spin on it and negate the importance of the content. Thanks for updating the link! 🙂

on the boo-boo.

The local stories are often the best but rarely get into the national news feeds, so people never think "anything is happening" when it comes to election-related news unless they have local access and see it, but a whole lot of stuff IS going on!

Maybe we should play this up in ads/billboards, Why Vote For Someone Who Can't Vote?

that have either passed laws or have been in the process of it - https://www.ncsl.org/elections-and-campaigns/felon-voting-rights

The summary (from the link) -

(snip)

In summary:

  • In the District of Columbia, Maine and Vermont, felons never lose their right to vote, even while they are incarcerated.
  • In 23 states, felons lose their voting rights only while incarcerated, and receive automatic restoration upon release. Note that in Maryland, convictions for buying or selling votes can only be restored through pardon.
  • In 15 states, felons lose their voting rights during incarceration, and for a period of time after, typically while on parole and/or probation. Voting rights are automatically restored after this time period. Former felons may also have to pay any outstanding fines, fees or restitution before their rights are restored.
  • In 10 states, felons lose their voting rights indefinitely for some crimes, or require a governor’s pardon for voting rights to be restored, face an additional waiting period after completion of sentence (including parole and probation) or require additional action before voting rights can be restored.

  • (snip)

Not sure of all the details of how their laws work (haven't dug into it).
