Confronted by a Republican voter about the Jan. 6 riot, Trump says 'nothing' was done wrong that day

Donald Trump on Wednesday shrugged off the idea that his conduct on Jan. 6, 2021, should cost him the backing of Republican voters after a former supporter confronted him at a televised town hall and said he would not cast a ballot for the former president because of his actions that day. In his response at the Univision event, Trump also distanced himself from the attack on the Capitol while minimizing the damage done by a mob of his supporters.
"Nothing done wrong at all," Trump said in a lengthy response after a Republican voter from Florida said he had lost his vote because of his responses to the riot and the Covid pandemic. The voter also questioned why he should support Trump when so many people who held high positions in his administration, including former Vice President Mike Pence, weren't backing him this year.
Trump said only "a very small portion" don't support him. "But because its me, somebody doesnt support they get a little publicity," he said. "The vice president, I disagree with him on what he did. I totally disagreed with him on what he did," Trump said, apparently referring to Pence's refusal to comply with his demands that he prevent Congress from certifying Joe Bidens election win on Jan. 6.
He then argued that the thousands of supporters who went to Washington for Jan. 6 were not there because of him, even though he tweeted on Dec. 19, 2020: Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild. "They didn't come because of me," Trump said Wednesday. "They came because of the election. They thought the election was a rigged election, and that's why they came." In 2020, and in the years since then, Trump has falsely claimed that the election was stolen. Many of those charged in the Jan. 6 riot have cited his election lies.

(13,564 posts)Trump's answer sounds like he probably just convinced that voter all over again why he should not be supporting Trump.

(11,040 posts)... just as he is incapable of distinguishing truth from lies and reality from self-delusion. I've always tried to attribute his support to ignorance and stupidity, but I've come to the conclusion that millions of Americans can't be THAT stupid. I now believe that most of his supporters know exactly who and what he is, and they just don't care. After decades of being plugged into the right-wing propaganda machine, their fear and resentment buttons have pushed so many times that their reasoning abilities have been dulled to the point that they'd rather have a spray-painted turd of a president than a Black female Democrat. The people who have created and curated this hatred are the true "enemy within," and that most definitely includes Fox "News."

(3,087 posts)It's 100% of his Vice Presidents. It's 100% of his Chairman of the Joint Chiefs: Gen Mark Milley. It's 100% of his National Security Advisor's: McMaster and Bolton. It's 100% of his Sec of Defense: Mattis and Esper (not counting the many acting Secretaries due to them quitting or getting fired). It's 50% of his White House Chief of Staff: Kelly and Mulvaney. Reince Priebus is a weenie and Mark Meadows is quiet because he's under indictment.
A good many of the members, of the former guy's administration who are not supporting him, are those who have been convicted or indicted for crimes related to their tenure.

(29 posts)The video at the link doesn't show the audience at all now. I looked it up to find the video with the audience and apparently the audience reaction is going viral. The women looked very unimpressed by his comments. Interesting that NBC cut that part out which made Trump look bad.

(18,999 posts)The conception, the planning, the execution, the aftermath. The attempt to overrun the Capitol and overthrow the government failed. traitor could truly ruin a wet dream, which I'm sure that J6 was for so many of the planners and their untrained, unregulated molitia (mob/militia)
The planners aren't ruined yet, but being scrutinized with a magnifying glass. Maybe they'll burst into flames. The untrained and stupid have been jailed by the hundreds, heading into the thousands. I hope that it happens that the people responsible and who were physically involved trying to kill police and elected officials will be stripped of their U.S. citizenship and all of the benefits of being an American.
