OMAHA A weekend in the national spotlight for Nebraskas 2nd District ended Sunday with a visit by the man who could be House Speaker if Democratic State Sen. Tony Vargas of Omaha wins his 2nd District race against Republican U.S. Rep. Don Bacon.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries headlined a get-out-the-vote rally for Vargas at North Omahas Big Mamas Kitchen and then attended a roundtable with 10 local small business owners at LeFlores New Look Fashions in the swing district.
Those were the public parts of Jeffries day with Vargas, which was set to end with a private fundraiser. It came two days after House Speaker Mike Johnson visited Beth El Synagogue in west Omaha to stump for Bacon and meet with local Jewish leaders.
Jeffries told the packed Big Mamas crowd that they have a way to change the dysfunction of Washington, D.C., by changing who they send to represent them. He said the road to a Democratic House majority in Congress runs through Omaha.
