1 in 5 Republicans want Trump to call election invalid if he loses

Source: Axios

Nearly one in five Republicans say that if Donald Trump loses the 2024 election, he should declare the results invalid and do whatever it takes to assume office, according to a new national survey.

Why it matters: The growing number of Republicans willing to shun democratic norms — and possibly embrace violence — comes as Trump continues to falsely claim the 2020 election was stolen from him and is saying the 2024 election is already rigged.

  • The survey from the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and the Brookings Institution is the latest sign of how Trump's grievances and conspiracy theories have reshaped his party — and whipped up its most disaffected, far-right elements.

  • Zoom in: Trump's falsehoods — and what Democrats say is the threat he poses to democracy — have even some Democrats questioning whether their party should accept a loss in the Nov. 5 election.

  • While 19% of Republicans say Trump should reject the election results if he loses, 12% of Democrats say Kamala Harris should do the same if she loses.
  • Meanwhile, nearly 3 in 10 Republicans believe that true American patriots may have to resort to violence to save the country, compared with 16% of independents and 8% of Democrats.

  • What they're saying: "I've been doing this for 20 years, and these answers ... are keeping me up at night," Robert P. Jones, president and founder of PRRI, tells Axios.

  • Jones said those supporting the loser of the election doing whatever it takes to assume office are essentially endorsing a coup against the United States.
  • "It's all pretty dark and worrisome," he said.

    And Democrat is 28%.

It is important to note we are talking about 20% of 31% of the electorate. Any number above 0 is concerning but we are still talking fringe beliefs.

One in five brain cells are telling me that we should shoot anyone who tries another coup attempt and arrest the party leadership in its entirety if one single person shot identifies as a rethug. Because that is what would have happened if the situation had been reversed.

    But, that is just me.

He's been saying that all along. Frankly, if he loses, his opinion is irrelevant.
If his base goes berserk, they'll be a lot of dead and wounded. But, I really don't think they're going to do that.
Even those brain dead cretins realize what happens to people who break the law to defend their loser.
Whining, pissing, and moaning will abound, and some individual acts of violence could follow, but the bulk of them aren't about to lose their jobs, houses, families, and freedom for Trump.
If Trump wins, it's a different story, and possibly a dangerous one.

a very small portion of the population.

and it's moot. if the number was zero out of 10 he'd still claim the big lie. in his twisted mind he cannot win. plus the prison thing.

the fact that 4 out of 5 republicans are hoping he concedes when he loses is good news.

Who gives a fuck what he declares “invalid”? He’s a loser. He can declare the election invalid all day long and it won’t change the fact that he’s a loser.

    Trump can go fuck himself.

    What a stupid article.

At what point do we declare that these words and actions present a " Clear and Present Danger" to the Unites States and take action in some form to remove (containing the threat only postpones the problem) to remove the threat? Serious question.

For some reason, there is an increasing desire on DU to go "extra-judicial" and that is the path to fascism as that is what the other side wants.

So there needs to be more engagement with the citizenry itself. We need to make sure they vote for SANE candidates in EVERY election, and NOT just every 2 years or 4 years, which often misses the elections of their state/local officials during those "off years", where many might have nefarious plans.
