Suspect arrested in shootings of Democratic National Committee office in Arizona

Source: The Independent

A suspect has been arrested in connection with three separate shootings in 20 days that damaged a Democratic National Committee campaign office in suburban Phoenix, authorities said Wednesday.

Tempe police said Jeffrey Michael Kelly, 60, also is accused of hanging several political signs lined with razor blades on Tuesday in Ahwatukee, an affluent suburb of Phoenix where most voters have chosen Democrats in recent elections.

Authorities said the hand-painted signs were attached to palm trees and appeared to criticize Democrats and their presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris.

Kelly was being held on three felony counts of acts of terrorism and four other counts related to the shootings, according to police. The Phoenix resident had an initial court appearance scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, around the same time Tempe police planned to release more information about Kelly’s arrest.

FBI finds hundreds of weapons at home of suspected shooter of Arizona Democratic Party office
https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/tempe-breaking/2024/10/23/suspect-identified-tempe-democratic-party-office-shootings/75806849007/

Federal agents on Wednesday morning hauled more than 100 firearms, including "machine guns," out of the Ahwatukee Foothills home of a man suspected of shooting at a campaign office for the Democratic Party three times and posting bags of white power labeled as poison near political signs.

Jeffrey Michael Kelly, 60, was arrested on Tuesday night near his Ahwatukee Foothills home by Tempe police who, according to court documents, used surveillance footage to find the suspect. Exactly how they narrowed in on Kelly was not made plain in the document released Wednesday.

About a dozen plainclothes law enforcement personnel were taking inventory of a menagerie of weapons in the carport of Kelly's home on Wednesday morning. A reporter overheard mention of handguns being found in a master bathroom safe and the words “machine gun” and "silencers.”

Neighbor Kris Smith said she didn’t know the man too well — by choice.

“There’s people you try to stay away from, “said Smith, a retiree who has lived in the neighborhood since 1992.

Smith said a neighbor who lived next door to the suspect often had contentious run-ins over the growth of bushes and pool maintenance issues. Smith said that neighbor described him as a “January 6-type person.“

I had a crazy guy that lived up the street where I lived that was threatening. We had to call the police on him. Ahe harassed a bunch of us and four households of us went and got a restraining order against him. He finally had a stroke and died a little while later. His immediate next door neighbor rang our doorbell to let us know he passed and brought some nice whiskey to take shots in celebration!

Top notch work by the FBI in collaring this man before someone was injured; or worse with his cache of weapons on hand.
