ASTON, Pa. (AP) Vice President Kamala Harris plans to lay out her campaigns closing argument by returning to the site near the White House where Donald Trump helped incite a mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol in January 2021 hoping it will crystalize for voters the fight between defending democracy and sowing political chaos.
Her campaign says Harris will give a speech at the Ellipse on Tuesday one week before Election Day and will urge the nation to turn the page toward a new era and away from Trump.
The site is symbolic, since its where Trump delivered a speech on Jan. 6, 2021, as Congress was convening to certify Joe Bidens victory in the election that past November. In it, Trump lied repeatedly about widespread voter fraud that had not occurred and urged supporters to fight. Hundreds then stormed the Capitol in a deadly riot.
Word of the speech came from a senior Harris campaign official who insisted on anonymity to discuss an address that is still in development. The Harris campaign is betting that her speaking at the Ellipse can provide an opportunity for the vice president to stress that the country no longer wants to be defined by a political combativeness that Trump seems to relish.

(46,405 posts)VP Harris has timing, perspective, remarkable communication skills, credibility. The more I see of her, the more I understand why she got to where she is. She is becoming more commanding as time rolls on.

(140,282 posts)that her campaign is doing a very interesting and difficult-to-carry-out strategy, although 45 is making it easy...
I.e., she and Biden ARE actually "the incumbents", so she can't forcefully "run away from herself".
So the campaign has her " (re-)running against" her and Biden's immediate "predecessor" instead, which is unique because that has never really happened before with a "former" who is running as a non-contiguous candidate (outside of Nixon, who had been Eisenhower's VP in the '50s and later ran for President in 1960, and then again in 1968).
That means she has to literally AND "figuratively" run against 45 and make it known that we CANNOT go back to the 45 administration (that came before the current one).

(24,105 posts)The Ellipse, sometimes referred to as President's Park South, is a 52-acre (21 ha) park south of the White House fence and north of Constitution Avenue and the National Mall in Washington, D.C., US. The Ellipse is also the name of the five-furlong (1.0 km) circumference street within the park. The entire park, which features monuments, is open to the public and is part of President's Park. The Ellipse is the location for many annual events.
From a mathematical point of view, the Ellipse is truly an ellipse. Its dimensions are 1,058 feet (322 m) for its major axis (east-west) and 903 feet (275 m) for its minor axis (north-south). Its eccentricity computes as e = 0.52 and its foci are 552 feet (168 m) apart, each 276 feet (84 m) from the center of the ellipse (east and west).

Lets fucking go.
