Advisers Propose That Trump Give Security Clearances Without F.B.I. Vetting
Source: New York Times (gift link)
A memo circulating among at least half a dozen advisers to former President Donald J. Trump recommends that if he is elected, he bypass traditional background checks by law enforcement officials and immediately grant security clearances to a large number of his appointees after being sworn in, according to three people briefed on the matter.
The proposal is being promoted by a small group including Boris Epshteyn, a top legal adviser to Mr. Trump who was influential in its development, according to the three people.
It is not clear whether Mr. Trump has seen the proposal or whether he is inclined to adopt it if he takes office.
But it would allow him to quickly install loyalists in major positions without subjecting them to the risk of long-running and intrusive F.B.I. background checks, potentially increasing the risks of people with problematic histories or ties to other nations being given influential White House roles. Such checks hung up clearances for a number of aides during Mr. Trumps presidency, including Mr. Trumps son-in-law Jared Kushner and Mr. Epshteyn himself.

(128 posts)In order for me to get a residency permit for Portugal, I had to go through 2 FBI background checks. No issues.
Based on this,, I might pass a FBI background check to get a security clearance to work for the White House.

(4,332 posts)both my (ex)husband and I had to go through to get our security clearances while in the Air Force, not to mention the extensive one I had to go through for my contractor position at DoD Army, this is so infuriating. The latter was so intensive and intrusive, that I copied the form and answers I put down, both in physical and digital formats, so when I had to do it again some years later, I could refer back to what I'd already written. As me all the addresses where I've lived for the last 10 years? Geez! I'm lucky to remember all the ones from the last 3 years! And that was the least problematic question. I passed with flying colors, but damn, it was a pain in the butt.

(374 posts)It asked something like - how many times have you been out of the US in the last five years?
I put down "More times than I can count." as I had been living in MIchigan and travelling to New York for family visits for those five years. And we would drive through Canada every time, and again on the return trips. And I had literally lost track of how many times we made that trip.
I explained this to the nice security officer, and they helped me write it in a way the Army and FBI would understand and believe. I was able to list other trips to Europe and Asia, as they were stamped in my passport whereas the Canada trips did not require passports at that time.
I did end up getting the clearance, but that was a long time ago.
I think it a horrible idea to skip vetting for people who will be in a position to access national secrets. If they can't pass the check give them jobs with no access. Or keep them out of government.

(2,226 posts)EVERY TIME that orange turd MENTIONS NATIONAL SECURITY. Having spent 21 years Active Duty and having to update my security clearance multiple times, Background checks etc....I shudder thinking about what would happen to me if I or one of my soldiers walked away with a TS Document and didn't return it or admit forgetting to turn in a document in after being told to get it back in the SCIF.....I spent a long of time in Military Intelligence and was a SCIF Manager. Me and my soldiers did not want jail time, no more clearance no more Army hello jail. ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING!!!! Luckily for me I had good troops and we were smart enough to not do STUPID like the orange turd. We didn't loose classified documents or sell them to Russia or North Korea. We did our jobs as professionals keeping Americas secrets safe and secured!

(35,690 posts)Kamala's appointees will do the same, I have no doubt. Who's going to waste time worrying about Chump's "appointees"?
He's not getting a chance to appoint anybody to anything.
