D.A. Bragg Announces Hate Crimes Indictment Of Woman For Pepper Spraying Uber Driver On The Upper East Side

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr., today announced the indictment of JENNIFER GUILBEAULT (23) for pepper spraying a 45-year-old Uber driver in an anti-Muslim attack on the Upper East Side in July 2024. GUILBEAULT is charged in a NYS Supreme Court indictment with one count each of Assault in the Second Degree as a Hate Crime, Assault in the Third Degree as a Hate Crime and Aggravated Harassment in the Second Degree.

As the Uber driver approached a red light on the Upper East Side, near East 65th Street and Lexington Avenue, he began praying in Arabic. GUILBEAULT lunged forward toward the driver’s seat, holding a can of pepper spray. She sprayed Shohel Mahmoud in the face, causing burning, redness and pain.
