Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird and 24 other states, including Nebraska, filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday in support of the Port of Tacomas appeal of a U.S. Circuit Court decision that upheld a citizens ability to sue individuals for violating the Clean Water Act.
We must not allow unelected, green activists to weaponize lawsuits to force woke mandates, hurt farmers, or threaten cities that are working hard to keep drinking water clean, Bird said in a press release.
The original case involved a citizen-led environmental group in Washington, Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, who sued the Port of Tacoma and its tenants for not implementing stormwater controls in accordance with the state-issued pollutant discharge permits.
In June 2024, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court ruled in favor of the environmental group. The courts opinion said even though the (state pollutant permits) exceeded the requirements of the federal regulations, they were enforceable in a citizen suit.

(41,356 posts)Iowa has grossly polluted rivers, lakes, and waterways. Most people are unaware that Iowa is beautiful, but the lakes and rivers are horribly polluted. It is a disgrace. Sadly, too many in power don't care about our planet. It is all about the greed.

Search for the name of your state. Add fish consumption advisory.
Here in Texas one of the states best catfish lake an adult male isnt supposed to eat over 8 ounces of catfish per month. It gets scarier when you look at the recommended amount for women of child bearing age and children. The big problem across most of Texas is pcbs and dioxins. It not just concerning catfish and carp but in some places also has large mouth bass on the list. Growing up here fish we caught were a staple food source. I know a lot of people around Lake Livingston area are poor and probably catfish is an important part of their diet. From the docks in Houston to the bay theres a lot of pollution. But it even gets worse when they dredge the ship channel stirring up all the silt.
In Louisiana there are areas youre not supposed to get in the water at all.
There are states where man made pollution isnt a problem. But still have natural toxins. Like mercury in the rivers and lakes.
Please if you fish for consumption check the advisories.

An Unreasonable Woman by Diane Wilson specifically related to her battle with Formosa plastics around Houston
Sound Truths and Corporate Myths by Dr. Ricki Ott which was a 15 year follow up on the Exxon Valdez spill covering both environment and health impacts

(81 posts)Thanks to the Republicans and Governor Kim the Reaper cancer rates in Iowa are the fastest growing in the country. Probably because of the pesticides that run off the fields into the water supply. They truly are trying to kill Iowans to help the corporations.
