DOJ to monitor polls in 27 states for compliance with voting rights laws

Source: Axios

The Justice Department announced Friday it will monitor polls in 27 states for compliance with federal voting rights laws on Election Day.

The big picture: Although the DOJ regularly monitors polls, unprecedented steps are being taken to protect election workers and ballots as concerns mount about voter intimidation, fraud and even violence at the polls.

  • A series of arson attacks on ballot boxes in Oregon and Washington have reemphasized questions about security on Election Day.

  • Zoom in: The DOJ said it will monitor 86 jurisdictions on Tuesday.

  • The Justice Department, which enforces federal voting rights laws, regularly deploys its staff to monitor for compliance during elections.
  • Tuesday's effort will be coordinated by the DOJ's Civil Rights Division, which will maintain contact with state and local election officials throughout the day.
  • Monitors will include those working in the Civil Rights Division, the U.S. Attorneys' Office and the Office of Personnel Management.

  • Zoom out: Republican lawmakers in Missouri and Florida are seeking to block the DOJ from polling sites.

I'm also curious as to how these particular locations were chosen for on-site monitoring, some of these locations seem like places where no particular problem might be expected.

I also wonder if, in addition to these on-site location-dedicated monitors, the justice department will have the mobile staff needed to respond to calls of civil rights violations in locations where they have not dedicated any monitors.

And I felt this paragraph should be repeated...

On Election Day, Civil Rights Division personnel will be available all day to receive questions and complaints from the public related to possible violations of federal voting rights laws. Reports may be made through the department’s website www.civilrights.justice.gov or by calling toll-free at 800-253-3931.

Also, it seems the state of Florida has to much to hide to let the doj do this on THEIR turf...

I hope they bring Federal LEO with them to arrest them on the spot, including Abbott's Gestapo agents if they try any strongarm tactics.

He should have been monitoring the polls a year ago, not at the last minute just before election day, amirite?

I know there's an Aryan Brotherhood element in these parts. This is where the Biden-Harris campaign bus was forced off of Interstate 35 back in 2020. It's a purple county – more bluish purple on the east side of the county where we have Texas State University students and staff, and more reddish purple on the south and western side of the county.

But I've taken the possibility of issues in my town as pretty small.

Hope the presence of the monitors helps our election go smoothly!

45 has called up ALL the scum of the United States to rise up and they are doing so, including right there in MA (not that they ever went away).

As a note - DOJ has a sort of "standard list" but will add when referred and apparently they got referrals from there.
