Kamala Harris Scores Major Endorsement in Texas

Source: Newsweek

Published Nov 01, 2024 at 12:57 PM EDT | Updated Nov 01, 2024 at 6:16 PM EDT

Texas's largest newspaper, the Houston Chronicle, has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

After a lengthy criticism of former President Donald Trump, saying that Democratic presidential nominee "Harris' best asset is that she's not Trump," the endorsement, written by the newspaper's editorial board, states: "Beyond her basic qualifications of human decency, self-control and mature leadership skills, her career path from law enforcement to the U.S. Senate to the vice president's office illustrates independence, drive and a steely spine."

Newsweek reached out to the Trump and Harris campaigns via their websites for comment on Friday. The newspaper praised Harris' emphasis on health care and business, noting the vice president's commitment to policies that may resonate with Texans, including "expanding access to affordable health care and her detailed plans to support small businesses—a backbone of Houston's economy."

The editorial board also lauded Harris for being "a champion of federal protections for abortion rights, desperately needed in Texas where an extreme ban doesn't include exceptions for rape or incest or enough protections for women with severe pregnancy complications."

What's also very cool is that a couple weeks ago, all five major dailies in Texas endorsed Colin Allred over Ted Cruz.

Most cities ARE blue, but I thought since it was Texas, that rule of thumb might not fit.

And then you tell me that the main newspapers had all endorsed Colin Alred.

Not that is the best news I've heard in at least a few hours!

Go Colin! Leave Ted Cruz cowering in a closet somewhere forever more!!!!

If he’s afraid of something, he doesn’t cower in a closet; he leaves the country!

Democrats have considered Harris County as one of their strongholds in Texas for decades, thus it is fitting that the major newspaper there makes the endorsement that keeps it simple for the residents.

If he were to do it, it should have been done alongside the Cheneys.

I suppose being the only living former (R) President outside of 45, his not endorsing the loon might count for something vs 4 of the living current and former (D) Presidents having endorsed Harris/Walz.

the cities themselves, not necessarily the suburbs. Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth & El Paso - and they are all in the top 25 in the country in terms of population.
