Former New York Rep. Michael Grimm (R) was left paralyzed after a horseback riding accident in September.
According to a GoFundMe page set up for Grimms recovery on Saturday, the former congressman was thrown from a horse and has been in the most devastating of situations. His GoFundMe seeks to elicit donations to help with his treatment to walk again.
The former New York lawmaker is a host for Newsmax, a former Marine and former FBI agent. The accident was first reported by the Staten Island Advance.
Former South Shore City Councilman Vincent Ignizio, who now serves as deputy executive director of the New York City Board of Elections, said in a Facebook post that Grimm needs help to cover the substantial costs that insurance doesnt cover on his long road to recovery.

He had come in during the 2010 rout election representing Staten Island in NY-13 & then NY-11 after redistricting. But he eventually had to resign from Congress for tax fraud charges (and went to prison for that).

(7,171 posts)Spinal cord injuries that leave patients paralyzed are prayer-worthy. Most patients reap the benefits of the universe stepping in to add the support of others.
Christopher Reeve, who I worked with post-accident, was deserving of sympathy. Same with Steve Gleason.
Then again, there are some who compete to be assholes with the gift of walking they have. And then lose that gift.
Sorry, fuck assholes like the Congressman.. ♿️

(142,213 posts)BUT for feds (including Congress), he would have needed 5 years in a position or in office to be vested, and in the case of those in Congress, they were eventually required to use the ACA for their insurance.
So since he started in Jan. 2011 but resigned in Jan. 2015 due to criminal charges, he might not have had enough time in for the federal insurance coverage.
ETA - Just checked and before the Congressional stint, he was in the military and in civilian service for a bunch of years so he should have been vested but it's possible that he might have lost all of that when he plead guilty for the tax charges.

(17,798 posts)I've met him many times. He even sat with me and two friends, who happen to be far, far-left (they don't even believe in prisons; I was the only sane one at the table), and we all debated for hours. Damn, I wish him well. Not a fan of his politics, but he was nothing but nice to us.
