Steve Bannon's Trial in a Border Wall Charity Scheme Case Delayed Until February

Source: US News and World Report/AP

Nov. 18, 2024, at 10:57 a.m.

NEW YORK (AP) — Conservative strategist Steve Bannon won't face trial until February on state charges of conspiring to dupe donors to build a border wall, a judge said Monday as prosecutors asked for the jury to be anonymous.

Bannon was not in court but listened in virtually as Judge April Newbauer set Feb. 25 for jury selection, postponing it from next month. Bannon did not speak except to say, “yes, ma'am” when asked whether he understood he must be in court on the new date.

Bannon, a longtime ally and onetime White House adviser to former and future President Donald Trump, was recently released from a four-month federal prison stint in a contempt of Congress case. His trial in the case surrounding the onetime charity known as WeBuildTheWall Inc. had been set to start Dec. 9. Bannon chaired the group’s advisory board.

The judge delayed the trial date after deciding to let the future jurors hear evidence that some of the wall charity's money went to pay a more than $600,000 credit card debt that a separate Bannon not-for-profit organization had racked up in 2019. Prosecutors wanted to introduce it, but defense lawyers argued unsuccessfully that it was irrelevant.

I know under "normal circumstances", trial dates get pushed around by both prosecutors and defense and unfortunately that is the way it is. BUT in this case, if prosecutors have more evidence of malfeasance then the more the merrier.

Bannon was already pardoned for the federal charges for this same thing.

It's up to the supposed "blue state" of NY to deal with.

45 cannot pardon state charges. But, this stopped being a normal world a long time ago.

If Bannon is found guilty and sentenced to jail, then New York state will take him into custody. What’s Trump going to do, send the army to free Bannon?

... I think we would have heard about it by now.

I don't think he is, nor does he care what happens to his old "friend." Chump doesn't have any friends, because that would imply that he has qualities like loyalty, empathy, and consideration for others.

Nope, not a chance.

one of the FEW people in his "inner circle" that he did pardon (he didn't even pardon Ghouliani for anything).

This is the "state version" of that fraud so other than threatening NY AG Tish James and D.A. Alvin Bragg (or the NY courts), he doesn't have any technical authority over this.

Yes there is always a delay of one reason or the other in court cases, but additional time gives prosecutors the opportunity to present more evidence. The issue of credit card debt seems like it could be important, too, as part of its definition. That remains fine as it is and let us see how it happens in February.
