Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump's pick for defense secretary, said on Wednesday he would not "back down" as new misconduct allegations cause growing concern among Republican senators tasked with whether to confirm him.
Going public in his own defense, Hegseth also directly addressed several of the accusations for the first time in an interview with Megyn Kelly. He denied many of the claims he mistreated women and pushed back on reports he was forced out from two veterans' nonprofit groups.
He's also promised senators he's stopped drinking and won't drink if confirmed, according to Missouri Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt. Some of the misconduct accusations included claims he has been drunk in public.
"He offered up to me, and I know he has with other senators too, that he's not drinking, and that's not something he's going to do when confirmed here," Schmitt said a day after meeting with Hegseth.
Sen. Roger Wicker, the incoming chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, which would vote to send Hegseth's nomination to the full Senate, affirmed that Hegseth committed to not drinking if he was confirmed............................

(51,252 posts)If he were a serious person he would have stopped drinking the day he was nominated if not years earlier. The best we can say is he has a ways to go before hitting bottom and getting to the point of actually stopping.
Promises to stop drinking are meaningless coming from alcoholics.

(869 posts)...he is confirmed. How many ways is this guy full of shit? I don't want to go off into alcoholism recovery thread but as you point out; he has no intention of stopping drinking.
He doesn't think it's a problem. The problem is people keep giving him shit about it. This is such classic, cliche' alcoholic-speak. Even with a shithead like Hegseth I hope he can find a way to sobriety. I just want it to be while outside of any government service.
Like you said, not a serious person.

(274 posts)I wouldn't hire this clown to take out the garbage.
He obviously has a huge problem with alcohol and the chances of him self reforming are slim to none.
Then there's his issue with misogyny along with a multitude of character flaws.
No way should any of the MAGA senators confirm him, but we all know most of them will kiss The Jerk's sorry ass in total fealty.

(7,584 posts)No one with a lick of sense will believe an alcoholic's conditional sobriety pledge. As once said, it's as phony as a three dollar bill. Hegseth is addicted. So here's the scenario. Hegseth is confirmed to run the DoD. Then he quits "cold turkey" and asserts that he's not an alcoholic, that it's merely a change of habit. But there's a problem and it's not unique. He's got physical dependence. He's physically addicted. He will have WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS that are debilitating. So he gets the dry heaves and he's having violent tremors while he's supposed to command the entire Defense Department??? Then he has to deal with depression and desperation while he's managing a multi-billion dollar budget??? Who's more crazy? Hegseth or the person who nominated him?? And this is to say NOTHING about his own inability to evaluate his own behavior. Since when does HE THINK that he's qualified for the DoD job. How does he justify his candidacy? If he believes that he can do the job, how detached from reality does he have to be? And if he's THAT detached from reality, how on Earth can he ever function when he's stressed and at wit's end trying to solve EVERYDAY administrative problems, no less existential world crises???

(7,114 posts)Drunks make these promises all the time, and, without counseling and lots of help, never keep them.
He needs to check into a detox unit and join Alcoholics Anonymous. After a couple years of demonstrating to everyone that he no longer drinks, then he could be considered for a minor government position, but never a major position in anyone's government.
The stress of being Secretary of Defense would break him almost immediately.
Of course he would still have the major character flaws that should have put him in prison, but didn't.
I hope the Republicans understand the danger to our defense that this guy represents.

(376 posts)In the 1980s Stephen King had a drinking problem. He only stopped after his family had an intervention and he went to rehab. His drug of choice was beer. Before the intervention he recognized that he might be drinking too much when he noticed that in one week he'd fill a large trash barrel in his garage with empty beer cans. People who drink like it and they don't notice if their actions are affecting anyone else until confronted with it. This guy's problem is so bad that once he's cast aside (Trump dislikes people who drink too much) even Fox News won't hire him back.
