Romanian court annuls result of presidential election first round
Source: BBC
It means the process will be restarted from scratch, with the government due to decide a date for a new vote.
The results of that first round saw Calin Georgescu, an almost unknown far-right Nato-sceptic who has previously praised Vladimir Putin, win the most votes.
The court said it made the ruling "to ensure the correctness and legality of the electoral process".
...
It comes after documents were ordered declassified from Romania's intelligence agencies, detailing what they said was a mass influence operation conducted from abroad to interfere with the result of the vote.

(16,655 posts)Like mandating that all voting machines produce the card like this one
I would feel pretty good if the machine had a slot where the voter could reinsert the card and get a list of what the person voted for. (Or a different device)
The card is interred into a tabulator that may or may not be hacked in tabulating the actual cards. The cards (ballots) are stored in the tabulator. In many states a random audit is conducted by taking the cards out and tabulated in a different machine which is good.
The equipment is good and it is a good system as long as bad actors do not have access.
I think the Democrats main problem is the voter registration drives. Naturally it is nice if everyone can and does vote. But what it the majority of the population has been so indoctrinated by bad people and vote against their own interest. In the past the only people who usually vote are were the knowledgable people. Not so much any more. I do not think that a perfect voting system can overcome the stupidity of people. It will only amplify it.

(102,693 posts)As far as I can tell, all candidates will still be able to run - they haven't said anyone is banned. But Georgescu will presumably be targeted as "the Russian candidate" in the hope that more people will turn out to vote for others. Whether or not that will be enough to kick him out of the top two to go forward to the second round, who knows (I'd imagine that most people who voted for him will do so again, because few people like admitting they were duped), but it should mean his chances of winning the second round are lower.
