US Appeals Court Upholds TikTok Law Forcing Its Sale

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. federal appeals court on Friday upheld a law requiring Chinese-based ByteDance to divest its popular short video app TikTok in the United States by early next year or face a ban. The ruling could be appealed to the Supreme Court or full appeals court panel.

U.S. appeals court Judges Sri Srinivasan, Neomi Rao and Douglas Ginsburg considered the legal challenges brought by TikTok and users against the law that gives ByteDance until Jan. 19 to sell or divest TikTok's U.S. assets or face a ban.

President Joe Biden, who signed the law in April, can grant a one-time extension of up to 90 days, but only if ByteDance has made significant progress in finding a buyer.

The Justice Department says under Chinese ownership, TikTok poses a serious national security threat because of its access to vast personal data of Americans, asserting China can covertly manipulate information that Americans consume via TikTok.

but it doesn’t change that it’s an ill-informed move.

Musk would be a fool to not buy TikTok once it’s on the block. And if he does, it will become a MAGA-driven, algorithmic cesspool that will rival the awful shithole that Twitter became.

... about Americans from TikToc that they would otherwise have to PAY to get from Google and Facebook! So unfair!

Young people live and die by TikTok. Banning it would alienate 80% of people under 25. It would be the end of the world to them - like taking porn away from House Speaker Johnson.

Many social media phone apps gather the same information as TikTok, so it's not like TikTok is that much of a greater threat. The only problem is that China can take the data from TikTok servers by fiat and use it for nefarious purposes. They can do that now anyway, probably.

So, if Dems come out opposed to the ban, we may be able to get those under-25's in the voting booth with outrage voting for Dems.

Just an immature thought for today.
