100-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor recalls confusion and chaos during Japanese bombing 83 years ago

PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii (AP) — Bob Fernandez thought he’d go dancing and see the world when he joined the U.S. Navy as a 17-year-old high school student in August 1941.

Four months later he found himself shaking from explosions and passing ammunition to artillery crews so his ship’s guns could return fire on Japanese planes bombing Pearl Harbor, a Navy base in Hawaii.

“When those things go off like that, we didn’t know what’s what,” said Fernandez, who is now 100. “We didn’t even know we were in a war.”

Two survivors of the bombing — each 100 or older — are planning to return to Pearl Harbor on Saturday to observe the 83rd anniversary of the attack that thrust the U.S. into World War II. They will join active-duty troops, veterans and members of the public for a remembrance ceremony hosted by the Navy and the National Park Service.

The CBI was a tough slog for the guys in Burma, etc., and unfortunately, the CBI is fairly neglected in the major histories. For example, I’d never heard of Merrill’s Marauders until earlier this year…and WW II history is a hobby of mine (my grandfather was a B-25 pilot in the 12th AF in the Mediterranean and ETO).

among other things. There were a couple of guys in my dad's outfit that committed suicide while over there. He had no idea how yellow his skin was until he got home and my grandmother about fainted. And so it went for over three years for him in WWII.

Born in 1923. Died in 2008. He turned 18 ten days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, I told him he should probably never buy lottery tickets with that kind of luck.

More or less OK: A lot of guys didn’t, or didn’t make it back at all, as you are well aware. My grandfather’s best friend didn’t make it back. Flak burst in the cockpit killed him. I’ve got a photo that my grandfather took of the plane after they got back. Copilot, miraculously, was not killed and able to fly it back to base.

4. There was a lot of confusion on 9/11/01 too, so I can imagine how crazy that day at Pearl Harbor
