McConnell takes indirect swipe at Trump on America's role in the world

Source: Politico

12/07/2024 04:19 PM EST

SIMI VALLEY, California — Outgoing Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell took aim at the isolationist faction of the Republican Party — and an implicit swipe at President-elect Donald Trump’s policies — in a speech Saturday, arguing the U.S. must double down on its commitments to alliances and hard military power to maintain its credibility on the international stage.

Speaking at the annual Reagan National Defense Forum at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, after which he received a standing ovation, the Kentucky Republican invoked the hawkish legacy of the 40th president, arguing that “influential voices” are forgetting the lessons of the Cold War amid growing threats from China and Russia.

“Within the party Ronald Reagan once led so capably, it is increasingly fashionable to suggest that the sort of global leadership he modeled is no longer America’s place,” McConnell said. “But let’s be absolutely clear: America will not be made great again by those who are content to manage our decline,” McConnell said, paraphrasing Trump’s longtime campaign slogan.

Though McConnell stepped aside as GOP leader, he’ll continue to be a relevant player in Washington, maintaining a powerful perch as chair of the Senate Defense Appropriations panel, which helps dictate the Pentagon’s budget.

I'm a couple of years younger than McConnell, couple of years older than Trump.

I have a list of people whose graves I will visit and piss on.

Two people on the list: Trump and McConnell.

I may have to stand in line at both.

I hate to stand in long lines.

As an aside, I bet he's got his eye on the Confederate monument, a huge monstrosity that towers over the entirety of Arlington National Cemetery. It's what remains after the "Why the fuck are we naming so many things after Confederate traitors?" project, which renamed a lot of major and minor facilities and bases after American military heroes, and removed statues of Robert E. Lee and others from government lands.

The bronze statue has been moved, but the base -- which is huge -- can't be removed without disturbing the graves around it. Once he sees how big it was, where it is located (Suckers and Loser Cemetery), he'll tell his MAGA minions to send him millions to create a statue of "your favorite president " that will be three times the size of the original, and covered in gold, naturally.

As an alternative, he'll have his billionaire friends buy the naming rights to the Washington Monument.

They have the advantage of exceptional health care. Not sure about Mitch, but both of Trump's parents lived long lives.

Had McConnell been smart, he would have agreed to convict Trump and remove him from any future office. I’m sure he feared that Trump’s MAGA voters would stay home in 2020, so he traded the future of democracy for a few votes for his party.

If he’d been smart…

And remember Lindsey? “If we nominate him, it’ll be the end of our party, and we’ll deserve it.”

They can still render him pretty helpless by refusing to accept anything or anyone he wants. To a certain extent, they’re doing it now.

Getting McConnell and Trump to engage in low intensity warfare, sending out surrogates to fight the battles that they're far to old to engage in, might just keep them from doing all the nefarious things they've promised, at least for a bit.

But it's too late for "take backs." Unless, of course, he can find enough friends to vote for an early impeachment in both the House and Senate.

I'm not holding my breath.
