Putin says Russia is ready to compromise with Trump on Ukraine war
Source: Rueters
MOSCOW, Dec 19 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that he was ready to compromise over Ukraine in possible talks with Donald Trump on ending the war and that Russian forces were moving towards achieving their primary goals on the battlefield.
Trump, a self-styled master of brokering agreements and author of the 1987 book "Trump: the Art of the Deal", has vowed to swiftly end the conflict, but has not yet given any details on how he might achieve that.
Putin, fielding questions on state TV during his annual question and answer session with Russians, told a reporter for a U.S. news channel that he was ready to meet Trump, whom he said he had not spoken to for years.
Asked what he might be able to offer Trump, Putin dismissed an assertion that Russia was in a weak position, saying that Russia had got much stronger since he ordered troops into Ukraine in 2022.

Irritating that the orange goon and putin act as if Ukraine and the EU have no say.

4- A few lives might be saved for a few years but once Pooty no longer cares about using tsf, WW111 will be started by Russia taking Ukraine and moving on to invade Poland.
5 - NATO will move against Russia but tsf will have already ended our participation and he or President Musk will side with Russia.

(8,050 posts)I pointed out that the poll had been posted on DU before, the headline was misleading, and asked him what percentage said they'd be willing to give up territory in such negotiations. He didn't reply, so here's my answer a few weeks ago:
This is where Gallup's figures get a bit convoluted, even if we accept their methodology in a country at war.
For instance, if you read the small print, they've combined findings from polls in 2022 and 2024 to come up with their figures because their n would have been too small otherwise. And they also imply polling was done by mobile phone and that done in 2023 and 2024 excluded 10-12% of even that sample. I probably don't need to go into how that might skew results.
The poll claims 52% of Ukrainians want a negotiated peace "as soon as possible". What's "possible" is incredibly vague as a measure for a start, but we'll press on. I mean, what were respondents supposed to say in response to such a loaded simplistic question? "No, I don't want to see the war end as soon as possible." Nevertheless, a fair proportion apparently did just that.
They then claim that 52% of that 52% subgroup would be open to making "some territorial concessions", and admit they left the degree of concessions deliberately vague. But 81% of the smaller 38% subgroup who want Ukraine to carry on fighting apparently now still want all territory lost between 2014 and now to be regained, including Crimea.
Finally, even within the flawed premises of this polling, they find that Ukrainians would prefer negotiations to have the roles of European partners predominating rather than the US.

(8,050 posts)I think Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas (who scares the crap out of the Russian warmongers) would be a good negotiating team member, which team must inevitably include one or more representatives from Ukraine.
Somebody from NATO itself might be too provocative, but it's worth bearing in mind since it's likely NATO and EU troops may be involved in policing whatever aftermath there might be from a settlement. The UN's been useless in this conflict, so I don't see much point in looking to them.
Turkey might have some constructive input, but maybe not politically acceptable to Russia right now given what's happening in the Middle East. Erdogan has indicated they want Ukraine's original boundaries respected, and it holds the key to entry to the Black Sea.
A role for Qatar might be an idea. It's respected as a negotiator and I believe has been involved in some successful POW swap negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

(798 posts)and "saw a soul." That led a massive expansion of Russian oligarch's wealth by buying extracted commodities (oil, natural gas, minerals, etc.) at what were then Russian prices (below market) with US money. It enriched a lot of wealthy Americans as well as Russian oligarchs. That begs the question: what does the next fool want to happen? Remember, Trump isn't JUST a Russian asset, he's the asset/lackey of the ultra-wealthy in the U.S. too.

I'd wager Stump has never read a book much less written one? I honestly hope (for the sake of the people caught in the crossfire) that the war does come to an end. But if Putin is allowed to keep one square mile of stolen land he won't stop there, we've seen this movie before.
