People are fleeing abortion bans states: report

Source: Salon

Published January 14, 2025 4:58AM (EST)

A new analysis has found tens of thousands of people, likely young folks, who live in states with strict abortion bans, are fleeing. The working paper, which is not yet peer-reviewed, was published by the nonprofit National Bureau of Economic Research. It found that since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade via the Dobbs decision in June 2022, states with near-total abortion bans have lost more than 36,000 people per quarter. People who lived in single-person households were more likely to move out of the abortion-ban states. The researchers looked at change-of-address data from the U.S. Postal Service.

“The effects are more prominent for single-person households than for family households, which may reflect larger effects on younger adults,” the researchers wrote. The researchers said they also found “suggestive evidence” of people leaving states that were “hostile” towards abortion in other ways.

Since Dobbs, which gave states the right to ban abortion, many states have gone above and beyond to further clamp down on access to abortion care. According to KFF’s dashboard, 12 states have completely banned abortions. Six states restrict abortion access between 6 and 12 weeks of gestation. Four restrict access between 18 and 22 weeks. In contrast, 14 states have enshrined reproductive rights, including abortion access, into their state constitutions.

The new research suggests that these states will face long-term economic consequences as a result of their hostile attitude toward abortion.

Those states' legislators think they can enslave young women to produce more people to be exploited by the patron corporations for profit.

In the red state I live in, we are seeing an influx of new people coming in. These tend to be northern transplants due to job relocation and retirement. Although, I will agree that revenue issues will arise when younger working people locate to pro choice issue states. Revenue will be higher there, vs. loss of revenue in pro life states. You will also see a rise in taxes and other fees to counter the revenue loss, adding another reason to leave for a pro choice state.

Ob/Gyns are surgeons who provide life-saving care to people of all ages, including older people with cancer, pelvic diseases, etc.

I don't see how a young Ob/Gyn would want to practice in Texas, for instance, where the law forbids them from saving the lives of their obstetric patients when there are complications of pregnancy. The loss of these specialists means fewer Gyn surgeons to care for older people, too.

These states have created a nightmare.

It's not always a question of "Can I get an abortion if I need one?" Most women don't face that dilemma more than two or three times in their lives. Some women never face it because some women never have an unwanted pregnancy.

For most women the question is, "Can I get proper medical care when I need it?" That situation that has developed in the red states with laws forbidding abortions for any reason. The answer for those women in those states is "No, they cannot."

To be sure, the incoming administration is likely to do things to make it more difficult to attend school out of state or to attend private school. Nevertheless many states that have restricted reproductive rights offer some pretty sweet incentives to lure kids with great grades to their schools. Will those be ignored? I'm guessing "yes."

Personally, I find this a little scary...
https://www.bu.edu/sph/news/articles/2024/permanent-contraception-procedures-surge-among-young-adults-after-dobbs]

Following the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision in June 2022, tubal ligations—commonly known as getting tubes tied—and vasectomies spiked abruptly among 18 to 30-year-olds, the age group that is more likely to have an abortion, as well as experience sterilization regret.

I mean, when I was 28, we were sure we didn't want children, but at 20? It's a crime that these young people are being made to make a decision they could easily regret later in life because being pregnant in this country can be a life-threatening condition. And thanks to Rethugs, it's the only life-threatening condition that doctors are not allowed to treat.

The best and the brightest will flee when their children can't get developed vaccines; when vaccine developers can't work.

The results will benefit other countries just a US physics profited by Germany's persecution of its Jewish Physicists.

Only religious schools as the alternative.
Think of all the wasted opportunities for kids. And if they choose science or engineering or medicine as their majors, there's someone from a foreign country with an h1b visa in their hand willing to work at half the price.

People are indeed leaving backward Texas.

For myself, I personally know of about 10
people who have left Texas in last 2 years.

Mainly Texans who decided their retirement was far better to live elsewhere than Texas.

In their 70s Retired to Mexico.
Moved to Area in Mexico that is Much Safer than Dallas.
Much cheaper than Dallas.
A LOT Cheaper utilities.
Cheaper healthcare than in US
Housing is cheaper.
Woman’s rights are protected,
While in Texas govt has taken rights away

And 3 single youngsters in their 30s,
that I know moved to Mexico recently for a better life
than in Texas. One still works for a US firm ‘remotely’
w/ a 6-figure salary and has 4-year legal temporary residency in Mexico.

And another young person I know just moved to Europe, to Turkey to teach. Has no plans of ever returning to US,especially with the US having such a backward person as Trump

AND of the dozens of my nieces and nephews,
the few that did live (or make that lived) in Texas,
3 moved away to a Democrat state long time ago.

Two recently moved to live and work in Mexico.
And THEY LOVE IT IN MEXICO!!

All my other nephews/nieces have ALWAYS looked at Texas as a backward
cesspool of racist Republicans, where the state government HATES women
and minorities.

Another nephew and his wife and child, live in Minnesota,
He has longed to live in Mexico , and his long term plan is to retire in Mexico
within the next 10 years if possible rather than waiting to retire later in 15 years
He tried hard to convince his own wife to give birth to their child in MEXICO instead of
the US, to acquire dual citizenship, a dual citizenship of his own child could have
‘helped’ him to retire in Mexico

Edit to Add…..

Those I know who moved away from Texas,,
ALL stated that the place they each moved to was far more tolerant of every person
regardless of color, orientation than backward Texas.

and all far better weather than Texas Hell summers.

The relatives who moved to Mexico, ALL were ecstatic how
much better the ‘standard of living’ was for them there in Mexico than in US.

And they felt the news media in Mexico was far superior for them.
None missed the crappy US corporate news’ nonstop propaganda in the US

He's in a small town near Guadalajara and he raves about it. The news makes the country seem like a lawless place with drug wars, etc., so we would be nervous to make that move.

Really safe place…San Miguel de Allende

Lots of gringos though.

A lot of places in Mexico are far safer than most major cities in US,
It’s the US corporate media that pushes “violent Mexico” any chance it can.

To most Mexicans living in Mexico…..
The US is looked at as a really violent and bigoted country.
Mass school shootings, racist police, and bigoted racist major politicians, like
in Republican Party AND Trump.

Mexicans wonder how US could elect such a vile person, a convicted felon,
a rapist…or civil conviction for sexual assault

And Mexico does indeed have corruption,
But Mexicans see the US as just another corrupt government,
Especially with Trump corrupt courts and corrupt judges that
Protected Trump
