GOP-led House votes to ban transgender athletes from women's sports

Source: CNN

The House voted on Tuesday to pass a GOP-led bill that would ban transgender athletes from women’s and girls’ sports at federally funded schools and educational institutions.

The legislation is expected to next be taken up by the GOP-controlled Senate. The House vote was 218 to 206 with two Democrats voting in favor and one Democrat voting “present.” Reps. Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar of Texas were the two Democrats who voted for the bill and Rep. Don Davis of North Carolina was the present vote.

Republicans put attacks on Democrats over transgender issues front and center in competitive races during the last election cycle, including at the top of the ticket with President-elect Donald Trump.

tactic. It’s another way they use women (by casting them as weak) to achieve their twisted goals. They want people to believe that only GOP men can rescue, poor, wretched and helpless women. It’s a form of misogyny and social control.

It was used to great effect during the run-up to the Iraq war. The book The Terror Dream by Susan Faludi goes in-depth about how concern is weaponized. The Iraq war was never about women’s rights, yet the right wanted it to seem that way.

Conservatives and misogynists don’t give a damn about women. If they did, they wouldn’t pass abortion restrictions that result in women dying in ER parking lots or at home after they were denied care. The legislation in the article is about enforcing rigid gender roles and trying to make trans people an enemy of purity and femininity.

Pretty much just kickers, but I don't think there are official restrictions. Shhh, don't tell the MAGA group that.

I have zero issue with leagues and colleges eliminating transgender participation in women's sports. The problem is that this has grown into an issue that affects kids in sports as early as 1st grade where some kids are trying to deal with gender identity and there really isn't a physical advantage.

Not sure why some Dems were so supportive of transgender athletes like Lia Thomas. There was never any serious discussion over it to really get a consensus. Unfortunately we missed an opportunity to cut off a rallying cry from bigots who want to hate everything LGBTQ.

But it really was a worst case scenario. She had competed on the men's team for a few years, then took one year of hormones (scout's honor) then immediately competed on the women's team. The rules have changed since then requiring more years of hormone therapy and possibly not allowing you to compete collegiately as a woman if you already did as a man.

Like I said, minors dealing with gender identity should be supported. But as an adult we have to realize there are limits. And of course this has nothing to do with the bigotry in the Olympics.

of men are deciding they are trans just to play some sport?

Wow, that many? I guess no sport, no team is safe from those dastardly trans athletes.

In other words, why do I think trans athletes are not that big a problem.

Or make a lot more sports like Ultimate Frisbee, which often has mixed gender teams. How bizarre is that?

There is no shortage of trans girls that are not physically able to be competitive. The argument about "fairness" becomes clearly bigoted when you substitute black for trans.

As for junior high, there were plenty of cis girls who could have kicked the crap out of me, a cis boy. So don't give me that "even the weakest" nonsense.

Meanwhile, how many girls have we lost to gun violence? How many have been raped? How many in danger from their abusers? How many will suffer because of abortion bans?
A heck of a lot more than 10

I remember when the Williams sisters were accused of being men.
It is still happening to girls that don't fit what some people think girls should look like.
This has nothing to do with protecting girls or women.

unless they tie local grants and subsidies to compliance. Sports are controlled by local schools, universities, sports associations, and universities. Local schools and private organizations in particular are difficult for the federal govt to regulate.
