Costco's unionized workers vote to authorize nationwide strike

Teamsters union members working at Costco Wholesale locations across the country voted to authorize a strike on Sunday, with more than 85% of members in favor of hitting the picket lines. The union represents more than 18,000 Costco employees nationally.
"Our members have spoken loud and clear -- Costco must deliver a fair contract, or they'll be held accountable," Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien said in a press release Sunday.
"From day one, we've told Costco that our members won't work a day past January 31 without a historic, industry-leading agreement. Costco's greedy executives have less than two weeks to do the right thing. If they refuse, they'll have no one to blame but themselves when our members go on strike."
The union says "fair wages and benefits" are the catalyst for the strike.

(6,150 posts)Became CEO in January 2024. I've heard he's a hardline type. Have noticed several changes at my local store that scream "micromanaging a-hole", e.g. making shoppers take everything out of their carts and put it on the conveyor belt to deter shoplifting (fine, but if I have a few large items spaced out in my cart so nothing is hiding below, it's absurd to make me take it all out although degree of enforcement varies from clerk to clerk). They're also training shoppers to use automated card scanners upon entering the store, instead of employees to check membership cards.

(146,692 posts)That was when Obama was in office and Obama was struggling to fill vacancies on the NLRB, where eventually he did 2 of them by "Recess Appointment" (while the Senate was in a "Pro-forma" session) and the SCOTUS smacked the appointments down because Senate "Pro-formas" meant they weren't "in Recess".
IIRC from back then, Walmart was offering "associates" pathways to move up the hierarchy and dangling all sorts of other incentives, and that seemed to be enough to stifle some of the dissent.

(17,106 posts)My words: This article was published 9/2024. A FT employee at $30 (which is the average wage at Costco) per hour earns a gross salary of over 60K per year. A FT employee earning $19.50 per hour earns a gross salary of over $30k per year.
'On the company's Thursday earnings conference call, CEO Ron Vachris said Costco's average wage has reached "just north" of $30 per hour after a round of wage increases brought its minimum wage to $19.50 per hour and added 50 cents per hour to each pay tier.
Costco has long advocated the nation that higher wages lead to more productive employees, which leads to higher sales. CFO Gary Millerchip on Thursday said wages are a "critical part of delivering a better experience for our members."

(4,974 posts)Why don't you talk to them?
"According to the union, the wholesale giant recently reported $254 billion in annual revenue and $7.4 billion in net profits, which marked a 135% increase since 2018.
"Yet, despite these record gains, the company refuses to meet the Teamsters' demands for fair wages and benefits that reflect the company's enormous success," the union said."
Costco is a multinational corporation that has a good image but they CAN and SHOULD do more. They are not perfect just because they donate to causes you support.
Joinfortmill
(17,106 posts)60k as an average salary seems quite reasonable for a business like Costco. They likely also have a good benefits package. I hope someone looks that up.
Civil discussion is becoming scarce here.
