Frigid temperatures engulfed the South on Monday ahead of a winter storm that's expected to spread heavy snow and disruptive ice around a region from Texas to north Florida that rarely sees such weather, sending residents rushing to insulate pipes, check heating systems and stock up on emergency supplies.
Around 40 million people, primarily across the southern U.S., were under some type of weather hazard, including more than 21 million under a winter storm warning, said Marc Chenard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland.
He added about 170 million people from the Rockies to points eastward were under either an extreme warning or a cold weather advisory.
Where are the winter storm warnings?
Parts of Texas are under a winter weather advisory, where some minor snow accumulations could result in slick spots — particularly on elevated surfaces. Multiple counties in the southern and eastern portions of the state are under a winter storm warning from an unusual blast of severe winter weather taking aim at a huge swath of the South including much of the northern Gulf Coast.........................
In Texas, three airports in Houston are halting flight operations on Tuesday as the region expects hazardous travel conditions. Major airlines are also delaying and canceling fights in preparation for the blast, CBS News MoneyWatch reported...................

(2,905 posts)Single digits at night, in the 20’s during the day. How convenient we just paid $9k for a new heating system. I would be worried with the old one. We don’t go anywhere, dogs wear quilted jackets when out and come back quickly, cat has a heated house and the thickest fur I’ve ever seen (he doesn’t seem to even notice the cold). We have never had cold like this for this long. Oddly, one of our hens has been laying almost every day! Go figure.

(199 posts)Setting my thermostat to 60 degrees for areas where water pipes are involved. Yorkies and I are staying in MBR with a quartz space heater, coffee pot, microwave and small 'fridge. (Also has door to to front porch for the Yorkies and lots of books for me.)
Long ranch house with much open space, so I am trying to take as much as I can off our power grid as this is predicted to last long into next week.
And... my friend with chickens called a little while ago to ask if I needed any eggs!
