Ohio State wins 1st national title since 2014, outlasting Notre Dame 34-23 in CFP championship game

ATLANTA (AP) — The pass seemed to hang up there forever. Did it feel like seven weeks? Did it feel like 10 years?

What a great debate for Ohio State fans to have forever.

When that teardrop of a throw from Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard on third-and-11 finally landed, light as a feather, in the hands of receiver Jeremiah Smith late in the fourth quarter Monday, Ohio State had locked up what would be a 34-23 victory over Notre Dame for its sixth national title and first in a decade.

It was that 56-yard gain that snuffed out a feverish Notre Dame comeback and made the Buckeyes the champion of the sport’s first 12-team playoff, just as they were champions of its first four-team tournament a decade ago.

I thought they were going to win it.

They played fair and square and represented themselves and school well.

Bucks managed to make it!

Go bucks.

... but after that Notre Dame kind of sucked. It was definitely a let-down.

I've been a Notre Dame fan for my entire life, and I'm proud that they made it to the final game.

Congrats to OSU for a well-played game and for winning the National Championship!

Well I had the opposite feeling about that first quarter.
People in Ohio saw their chance of winning go down the drain.

It was a gut punch and Ryan Day had to kick the team's ass around the locker room
a few times after that first quarter. Whatever he said worked and those kids
came out and played some football.

But then at the end I was sure ND was going to tie the game.
So it was nip and tuck there again, but OSU managed to pull it off.

Oh yes I would have been OK with a ND win.
Disappointed but OK.

ND did a fine job, is a great team and a respectable one.
They don't have to cheat like other schools do, and don't try to injure OSU players.
They have decent fans as well.

I actually felt so bad for the ND coach, he made some bad calls and looked distraught.
It was hard to watch his face.

But anyone who gets to the title game is a winner.

... but I'm sure he'll have a long and illustrious career as a football coach.

Last night I thought Notre Dame's weakness was defense. OSU took good advantage of every opportunity they got, and that's why they are holding the trophy today.

Well ND did the same thing in the first quarter.

Took advantage of OSU's weaknesses
and were like a brick wall, OSU could not get a toe hold.

ND QB was a like an energizer bunny running himself all over the field.

Ohioans saw their lives flash before their eyes.

OSU fans post online in real time during a game,
and some guys at the stadium said they were leaving
at the end of the first quarter. They could not watch the whole game.
We're going to go the nearest bar and get blotto.

So ND scared the hell out of the entire state of Ohio.

Does anyone ever tell the team that wins the Super Bowl, for example, that because they lost a game earlier in the year, it makes their win diminished somehow?

I'm to the point where I don't see "Notre Dame" and "Ohio State" anymore; all I see is "Trumper State" versus "Trumper State"
