Republicans Won't Denounce Trump's Pardons For Jan. 6 Rioters Who Beat Police Officers

WASHINGTON They said over and over that violent Jan. 6 rioters shouldnt get a reprieve, but now that President Donald Trump has pardoned nearly all defendants convicted of participating in the 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol, Republicans were mostly OK with it.
Were looking at the future, not the past, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) told reporters on Monday after Trump issued sweeping pardons that included scores of people who assaulted police officers at the Jan. 6, 2021, riot. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) deferred to Trump, saying that its the presidents prerogative.
And while Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) maintained that people who violate the law should be prosecuted, he demurred when asked by a reporter specifically about the Jan. 6 pardons. I havent gone into the detail, Scott said.
Tuesdays dodges by Republican senators marked the return of a frequent ritual from Trumps first term: He would do or say something outrageous, and when reporters asked members of his party about it, they somehow hadnt heard about it.

(2,291 posts)or longer. The demands will get worse and worse. They're in too deep to get out.
One has to wonder why anyone would sign up for this.
Then you realize you're imposing your human feelings on people who don't have them. You can find a few hundred nut jobs in a country this big who wouldn't have made it in a real meritocracy, who will jump at the opportunity when the reasonable people have been weeded out.
We'll watch them squirm but the ones who can't take it and leave (or are expelleld) will just let in crazier ones.

(996 posts)I mean like actually afraid that they might do something to them physically if they come out too strongly against Trump. His followers are emboldened after he pardoned all the January 6'ers, even the violent ones.
