Google maps updates Gulf of Mexico name for US users
Source: BBC News
Explaining the move, Google said it was making the change as part of "a longstanding practice" of following name changes when updated by official government sources.
It said the Gulf - which is bordered by the US, Cuba and Mexico - would not be changed for people using the app in Mexico, and users elsewhere in the world will see the label: "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)".
It comes after President Donald Trump ordered the body of water to be renamed in US government documents after he returned to office last month.
Mexico had decried the move, arguing that the US had no legal right to change the gulf's name.

I am just waiting to be arrested and sent for re-education because Donald Trump (and anyone who even can say his name without an urge to vomit) can kiss my ass....not on one side, and not on the other, but right in the fucking middle.

The US can only legally change 12 miles offshore.
I complained. Doubt it will do any good.

Well, I looked at taking a transit bus trip to a location in downtown Minneapolis from a location in the first suburb west of Minneapolis:
Bing suggested two different routes - they both had transfer points in a very high-crime area. It also does NOT show the busstop numbers, which is very helpful and useful info
Google gave 4 suggestions including one of those, and another that involves no transfers at all. It shows busstop numbers.
ETA- On Bing, I'm having trouble with editing Measure A Distance, another important function for me.
Bing still shows Gulf of Mexico, so that's the one positive so far.

(32,712 posts)That's because Bing's geolocation doesn't exist.
It gave me the name of a store. I clicked on the name and it went to Google maps. Also there is no GPS that I can see.

(32,712 posts)It even has GPS and voice directions. So I will try that...
The odds are the other maps will all follow suite anyway. All Google needs to do is change a name in a spreadsheet and it changes it on the map. (I create pins in google maps. It's super easy) All you gotta do to change the name of a pin is to change a word in the spreadsheet.
It looks the official US maps (not google) require going into the actual graphic software and changing the name. Hence official US maps have not been changed.
I'm not sure how other interactive internet maps works.
This is what Apple maps has. Users on Reddit state that when you click on the name, it changes to Gulf of America.
I don't know if the name on the physical map is as easy to change as on Google's

(32,712 posts)Google began to populate the change on Feb. 10, and Apple just a day later, on Feb. 11. Microsoft's Bing Maps had not made the change as of press time, but a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed it was on the way.
"We are committed to providing users with accurate and up-to-date information," the Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement. "In accordance with established product policies, we are updating Bing Maps to reflect the Geographic Names Information System's nomenclature in the United States which includes changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in the US."

Here is why Google was the first. Their maps are super easy to change.
I'm sure their master list is a spreadsheet and all they needed to do was change the name..
The simple change the name on their master spreadsheet.
And here is how users can create their own maps:
1. Make a spreadsheet

2. Upload it to Google Maps.

3. Share

Of course I don't have access to change the real maps, but I can create my own maps with whatever names I want, wherever I want.

Giving a six-month deadline, the proposed bill would direct the secretary of the interior team to ensure federal paperwork gets updated to the Stars and Stripes-inspired new name.
America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland, Carter said in a statement to the New York Post.
Coming from an insurrectionist traitor regime, I thing it is more like a Stars and Bars-inspired new name (whose colors are also red, white and blue. You've probably read the news that they've renamed Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), back to Fort Bragg, but changed the namesake from the Confederate general to a silver-star earning WWII private with a last name of Bragg to give the renaming a fig leaf)
I hope we won't need map-alteration techniques for this!

(32,712 posts)When Trump proposed renaming the gulf, I did my homework and quickly saw that it was well within his power. (grhh)
The only hold up were all the agencies involved. I thought maybe the agencies wouldn't be able to pull it off or it would not be cost effective etc. (Well cost doesn't matter to Trump) I thought there would be pushback from the military and oil companies and the proposal would fall apart.
Changing Greenland would involve taking over and annexing another country.

Oh well, I'm glad I don't need to ditch Google! I've relied on Google for all sorts of political mapping. We create maps of polling sites, election results, you name it. You just can't do that with Bing. Esri is an option, but it's also expensive.
Google is free.
Mapquest still is Gulf of Mexico.
TooMuchTelly
(19 posts)And it would show the Gulf of Mexico but put the Gulf of America on the map and in the address bar so I just kept asking it to look up the Gulf of Mexico and after I did that about four or five times it kept the Gulf of Mexico and didn't put Gulf of America lol.
