Senate Democrats try to regroup ahead of GOP budget barrage

Source: Axios

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is summoning his caucus for a rare Saturday conference call ahead of a potential reconciliation "vote-a-rama" next week.

Why it matters: Senate Budget Chair Lindsey Graham's (R-S.C.) budget package includes some $175 billion in border security spending, presenting a potential political minefield for Democratic senators.

  • But Schumer also wants to look for opportunities to force Republicans to play defense by offering his own amendments to make them squirm.
  • Senators want to discuss where they should stick together in opposition to the GOP and when they can allow their members to break ranks, according to people familiar with the matter.
  • Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) might call Graham's budget package to the floor next week, which would lead to a "vote-a-rama" — in which senators can offer amendments for some 50 hours to score political points.

  • Zoom out: Schumer has given his members broad leeway on some controversial issues around immigration, like the Laken Riley Act.

  • Democratic activists are demanding their elected lawmakers mount a more forceful response to President Trump's dismantling of the federal government.
  • But the reality for incumbent Democrats is that they don't have any immediate way to stop Trump, short of appealing to the federal courts.
  • Senate Democrats staged an all-night talk fest last week to protest the confirmation of Russ Vought as Office of Budget and Management director. He was confirmed on a party-line vote.

Dems operating like Democracy requires them to act is NOT "regrouping", it's operating as a DEMOCRACY operates.

Axios is doing what most of the legacy press, and all of the social media dumbass "influencers" are doing.....

    - Fascism is "fun and exciting"
    - Democracy is "boooooooooring"

They aren't reporting "news", they're promoting a show.

They won't realize the seriousness of this shit, even when they are on their way to GITMO.

but we still need to somehow know what Democrats are doing or are attempting to do, otherwise DU erupts in nothing but OP after OP about "Democrats aren't doing anything", "Democrats are keeping their powder dry", "Democrats are sitting on their hands...". etc., etc.

Very few people here are willing to go to the websites of every Democratic member of Congress to look at their press releases to find out what is going on.

    their press releases.

Which means pretty much no Democrats are doing it.

So ..... it seems like our leaders might want to try something else to get their message out.

PS: I did read my rep's single press release. It didn't say much.

about Democrats finding someone to do a "daily press conference" (they mentioned Buttigieg but it could be anyone) - and in that case, they need to stop relying on mainly the House and Senate Minority Leaders' pressers (which do happen but only occasionally get reported on by anyone beyond CSPAN and Roll Call).

And IMHO, they should continue to do it even if no media shows up (record it and post it yourself) and eventually someone might do it. It would be a "Standing Press Conference" and if Reps/Senators want to chime in with their own updates to include in the speaking agenda, then the more the better.

It could even be done at the same time that 45's loon Press Secretary is giving her presser, which could provide an alternative that is actually based in reality and presents FACTS. Since AP has been kicked out of 45's looneyverse, they should be invited to OUR info sessions.

We don't seem to want to give ideas time to "catch on". The GOP spent DECADES getting where they are today.

They are split between those who want a fast budget bill now with funding for deportation (the border is secure though they will for sure call it border funding) and on the other hand, the old style tax break Republicans.

Tax breakers want to extend the current tax breaks, adding 1.7T to the debt, and maybe offset it with cuts to Medicaid and even the holly grail of SS and Medicare. Just nibbles around the edges. Corporate tax breaks, SALT cap removal to keep rich Dems happy.

On the other side are the immigration hawks and cut taxes on tips, cut taxes on Social Security, and cut taxes on overtime.

Over on the R side it corporatists vs the pandering to the working class. Trum is silent.

If the corporatists give in to the new guys, it will make the real budget bill that comes up later much harder to pass.

They want the working class votes, but the wealthy want the money too. Can't have both.

Ds are always soooo scared to take a vote. Some will consider voting for the reconciliation bill so they can't be attacked for voting against border/immigration content.

Rs never have that problem. They'll vote in ways that piss people off and just walk away. Lie about their votes even, if it serves a purpose. Or they'll say there was other stuff in the bill they couldn't vote for, or whatever. But they will do it and they don't suffer electoral harm for it.

Ds need some spine!!! It's Feb '25. There isn't a vote taken that will affect electoral prospects in Nov '26. Jeez!
